Defying pressure from opposition parties for rollback of demonetisation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly justified his action and said it was meant to help the poor and the middle classes as well as to clean up the system.
The RBI has detected fraudulent practices among bank staff, who have been found to be bending the rules to favour customers in exchanging the demonetised notes. It has also noticed cases of people helping cash hoarders by making deposits into their own accounts.

The demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes is being seen positively by a large part of the population cutting across the lines of age, income levels and area of residence, a nationwide survey conducted by C-Voter has suggested. A whopping 80-86 percent of those surveyed said the inconvenience caused by the demonetisation is worth the effort of combating black money.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday announced that individuals withdrawing cash for weddings, and using the money to make payments of Rs 10,000 or higher, must submit declarations that the recipients of the accounts don't have bank accounts.
Train tickets booked through the IRCTC website will become cheaper from Wednesday till the end of the year as the government has waived service tax to encourage cashless transactions in the wake of the demonetisation exercise.
RBI on Tuesday asked banks to take stern action against officials indulging in fraudulent practices while exchanging or depositing the invalid currency. Banks have also been asked to remain prepared to provide details about the notes exchanged or deposited on short notice.

The finance ministry today said 500 and 1,000 rupee notes cannot be used for making deposits in small savings schemes. "The matter was examined in the ministry and it has been decided that subscribers of small savings schemes may not be allowed to deposit old currency note of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 in small saving schemes," the ministry said. Small saving schemes include Post Office deposits public provident fund and Sukanya Samriddhi. Interest rate on these schemes range between 7.3-8.5 per cent.

Government sets up panels to follow through demonetisation move
Government said it has formed committees of senior officials to visit states and UTs and report status of implementation of its decision pertaining to demonetisation. These teams will visit the states allocated to them for at least 2 days and will assess status of the implementation.
In view of cash crunch+ being faced by borrowers, the RBI on Monday provided additional 60 days for repayment of housing, car, farm and other loans worth up to Rs 1 crore. This is applicable to loans payable between November 1 and December 31, the RBI said in a notification.
