People visited the outlets of supermarket chain Big Bazaar on Thursday to withdraw cash. They said it was quite convenient than standing in queues outside bank offices and at ATM kiosks for hours. The State Bank of India (SBI) helped Big Bazaar activate this facility through the bank's cash at point of sale (POS) machines.

Demonetisation is set to become a campaign issue against BJP, with Congress deciding to seize upon the controversy to kick off the third leg of its mass contact for Uttar Pradesh polls.

Demonetisation has the support of over 93 percent of the 5,00,000 people who took the survey on the Narendra Modi app, according to a statement put out by Prime Minister Modi's website. The release said only 2 percent viewed the demonetisation negatively.

The Supreme Court entertained the Centre's plea to transfer petitions against demonetisation in various high courts either to the SC or one of the HCs to avoid multiplicity of judicial decisions but refused to stay ongoing proceedings in various high courts.

Amid reports that common people are made to run from pillar to post by some private hospitals for currency notes, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis today appealed to them to cooperate with the patients seeking urgent medical attention and accept the old higher value notes.

People can deposit the now — invalid Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination currency notes — in their Post Office savings accounts, the finance ministry said on Wednesday. A Post Office Savings Account offers interest of 4% per annum on individual or joint accounts. Such accounts can be opened with an amount as low as Rs 20.

The Gujarat unit of the Congress party has planned a five-day agitational programmes, including 'rail roko', in protest against the Narendra Modi government's demonetisation move and to highlight the hardship the people are facing because of it.

The CPM said it will observe November 28 as "All India Protest Day" to protest against the withdrawal of Rs 500/1000 currency notes by the government and the problems faced by the people, especially poor and marginalized, due to the decision.

Telangana's revenues are likely to come down by nearly Rs 3,000 crore during the current financial year as a result of demonetisation of high value currency notes. The government on Wednesday told a central team visiting the state to study the impact of demonetisation that the state may suffer a revenue loss of Rs 540 crore every month. Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma and some top officials met the central team and submitted a detailed report on the impact of the scrapping of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes.

Slamming the NDA government led by Narendra Modi for “lack of understanding” on the demonetisation issue, AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh stated that the move to demonetise high denomination notes was a “blunder and a scam where some people had advance notice.”

Supreme Court today refused to restrain HCs from taking up issues arising out of govt's decision to demonetise high-denomination currency notes. Earlier on Nov 18, SC had refused to stop high courts from entertaining challenges to govt's decision to ban Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.

Out of total 2 lakh ATMs in the country, 82,000 have already been recalibrated and people can withdraw the new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes from these. According to finance ministry, the recalibration of all ATMs across the country would be completed within a few days.

Recalibration of all ATMs across West Bengal would take another 10 days and so far only 30 per cent of these have been modified for new currency notes, the state government was on Wednesday informed by RBI and other bank officials.
