Schengen Visa 2025: 5 important tips for Indians to boost approval chances

Schengen visa is one of the most important travel documents which allows travellers to visit 29 European countries under a single visa. If you are someone planning to explore Europe, this visa is a must without which you won't be allowed to enter many prominent countries in Europe.

But getting a Schengen visa these days is like running a marathon with so many documents that will make you confused. But if you are someone who wants to visit Europe, (Indian tourists, students, and business travellers), then it’s an unavoidable kind of situation.
However, with high demand and stricter rules in 2025, it’s important to approach the application process with preparation, precision and correction.

On this note, let’s have a look at five important things Indian travellers should keep in mind before applying for a Schengen visa this year.

2/6

Choosing the Embassy

First thing first. You need to choose the right Embassy. Though all Schengen countries follow a common visa policy, the rates of approval differ country to country. If data is to be believed, in 2024, the highest approval rates for Indian applicants were recorded by Belgium (90.6%), Germany (88.7%), Italy (88.7%), and Switzerland (87.9%).

Useful tips:
Choose the right consulate: It’s also important to apply at the correct consulate. In many cases (if you are visiting multiple nations), it is advised to apply to the country where you plan to spend the most time, or, if durations are equal, where you first enter. European nations including Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia are known for faster processing times—many times within 7 to 10 days. Therefore, picking the right embassy can make a big difference.
Submit a strong and consistent document package: It is essential to make your document flawless and strong. As of 2025, Indian applicants must submit the following:
A valid passport with at least 3 months validity beyond the intended return date and two blank pages.
A completed Schengen visa application form and one recent passport-size photo.
Proof of travel, including a round-trip flight reservation and confirmed hotel bookings matching your travel dates.
Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 (INR 30,07,890), valid throughout the Schengen region.
Financial documents, including 3–6 months of bank statements (with bank stamp), salary slips, and ITRs. Your account must show genuine and steady income, not sudden large deposits.
A detailed cover letter with your travel purpose, daily itinerary, and proof of ties to India such as a job, business, or property.
Inconsistencies or missing documents often lead to rejection. Double-check everything.

3/6

Time your application wisely

The ideal time to apply is between 30 and 60 days before your planned travel. Although applications are accepted up to six months in advance, last-minute filings (less than 15 working days) can be risky due to appointment delays or peak-season backlogs.
Visa fees as of 2025 are €80 (INR 8,019.92) for adults, €40 (INR 4,009.96) for kids aged 6 to 12, and free for those under 6. Additional service charges by VFS or BLS typically range from ₹1,800 to ₹2,200. Keep in mind that visa processing times range from 15 to 30 working days, depending on the embassy and season.

4/6

Interview

While many Schengen applications are processed without interviews, certain embassies—especially Germany and France—may call you in. Be ready with answers for questions related to your itinerary, finances, and return journeys.
Answer truthfully is the key. Remain calm, answer calmly, be ready with all your documents, and intent to return to India. Dress professionally, arrive timely, don't be late. Be confident. Interviews are generally short.

5/6

Be aware of policy changes and reapplication process

In a significant policy shift, Germany has officially ended its informal remonstration (appeal) process for Indian applicants as of July 2025. Rejected applicants must now go through a formal legal appeal, which can be time-consuming and expensive. So be aware of new rules before applying.

6/6

Upcoming development (EES)

The EU will also implement the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) in October 2025. This new system will replace physical passport stamping with biometric tracking. This will affect how travellers enter and exit Schengen nations and will play a vital role.

In short, applying for a Schengen visa from India in 2025 demands immense preparation, attention, factual correctness and awareness of changing rules. But by following these tips, you can improve your chances of a successful application. Happy tripping!
