In pictures: Vande Bharat Sleeper train — Automatic doors to modern toilets as Rail Minister Vaishnaw shows what’s inside

Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw inspected India’s first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper Train at New Delhi Railway Station, marking yet another major step forward in the direction of a modern rail travel experience over long distances.

The visit was an eye opener to how the Indian Railways is changing overnight train journeys. During his visit, the Union Minister inspected the sleeper coaches to check out the facilities, which included seating and berthing arrangements, modern interiors, lighting systems, safety installations and overall passenger amenities. Authorities said they had also prioritised improving safety features and facilities on the train, while special focus has also been given on passenger safety and onboard amenities.



A notable quality of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is its full safety system. There is the KAVACH safety system in place, in addition to automatic doors and enhanced fire safety features that have been introduced. Coaches will be provided with disinfectant sprayers for regular cleanliness. All coaches have been fitted with CCTV surveillance to enhance passenger safety during overnight travel.

Innovative design features are another important aspect. Toilet design has received special attention, layouts have been engineered to enhance cleanliness and reduce water splashing, something frequently complained about by passengers on long-distance trains. These changes are part of Indian Railways’ larger efforts to improve hygiene, comfort, and offer a more refined overnight travel experience.

The first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is scheduled to run from Guwahati in Assam to Howrah, a route linking the Northeast with eastern India. It’s being billed as a game-changing development in overnight rail travel, combining faster speeds with the luxury of sleeper-style comfort. Officials said the train passed through the entire cycle of trials, testing, and certification, confirming it is fit for commercial service.

The flagging-off of the first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is expected in January and Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, will flag off the train on the Guwahati–Howrah route. According to media reports, the ‘Make in India’ initiative of Indian Railways is not only expected to boost railway manufacturing infrastructure but could also start a ‘new era’ for the national carrier.

Technically, the train features a 16-coach formation designed for both capacity and comfort. It comprises 11 AC three-tier coaches, four AC two-tier coaches, and one AC first-class coach, with a total carrying capacity of about 823 passengers. State-of-the-art suspension systems provide superior ride comfort, while ergonomic interiors and high sanitation standards ensure a more luxurious journey, even on overnight routes.

Passengers travelling on the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will be served region-specific meals during the journey. Services originating from Guwahati will offer authentic Assamese cuisine, while those starting from Kolkata will feature traditional Bengali dishes, adding a distinct regional touch to the onboard dining experience.

Debuting as a semi-high-speed train with a maximum design speed of up to 180 kmph, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train combines advanced technology with faster travel times. The project underscores Indian Railways’ continued focus on passenger comfort, safety, and technological innovation, aimed at delivering a world-class long-distance travel experience.
