The revered chota Char Dham temples of Uttarakhand: A complete guide

Uttarakhand, the ‘Land of Gods’, is known for its rich religious heritage. The Indian state is home to some of the most revered pilgrimage sites in the world. Among these, the Char Dham temples, also known as chota Char Dham, hold special importance for Hindus across the globe.
The term "Char Dham" means "four sacred abodes." So there are four temples in Uttarakhand, which are Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. All these make up this revered pilgrimage circuit which is set in the Indian Himalayas. These are considered one of the most spiritual journeys that every Hindu aims to undertake at least once in their lifetime.

Yamunotri Temple in the Uttarkashi district is one of the most prominent temples of the Char Dham dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the sister of Yama, the god of death. Set at an altitude of 3,293 m, the temple can be reached by a trek of about 6 km from the town of Janki Chatti.
The sojourn to Yamunotri is noted for its beautiful natural beauty, with stunning mountain views, green forests, and many hot springs. The temple is known for black marble statue of the deity. Devotees also take a ritual bath in the hot water springs near the temple before offering prayers.

Next temple in the line is the Gangotri Temple which is set at an altitude of 3,100 meters. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the most sacred river in Hinduism. The temple is built on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, which is known as the manifestation of the divine Ganga.
It is said that the temple was established by the great sage, King Bhagirath. The river is believed to have descended to Earth at this location after Bhagirath's penance therefore, pilgrims often take a dip in the river near the temple, to wash away their unknown sins. The temple is open to devotees from May to October.

Badrinath temple in the Char Dham circuit is one of the holiest places in Hinduism. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River. The temple is considered a major pilgrimage site for Hindus and is also part of the larger or main Char Dham Yatra.
Pilgrims visit here to offer prayers and seek blessings for spiritual liberation. The temple is also known for the "Tapt Kund," a hot water spring located near the temple, where devotees take a holy dip. The temple is open from May to November, as the area experiences extreme cold weather in the winter months.

Kedarnath Temple is probably one of the most famous temples in India. Situated in the Rudraprayag district, it is also one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The temple is known for offering otherworldly views of snow-clad peaks of the Himalayas and is believed to be built by the Pandavas, the five brothers. Pilgrims travel to Kedarnath either by a 14-kilometer trek from Gaurikund or via helicopter services during the yatra season.
Kedarnath Temple is of utmost religious significance and perfect for those who wish to go on a soul searching spiritual journey. The temple is open for only six months a year, as the region remains inaccessible during winter due to heavy snowfall.
