6 Indian lakes that are considered sacred

Across India, lakes have long been more than just geographical features; they are reflections of divinity, sanctuaries of faith, and are surrounded by myths. Nestled in mountains, deserts, and plains alike, these serene waters are believed to possess cleansing and purifying powers. Some are linked to gods and goddesses, while others hold stories of saints and sages who once meditated by their shores. Here are some of the most revered lakes across India, each with its own unique tale.

This tranquil lake is among the most sacred water bodies in India. According to legend, it was created by the lotus petals that fell from the hands of Lord Brahma. The lake is surrounded by 52 ghats where devotees take ritual dips. They believe that the waters cleanse sins and grant salvation. Every year during Kartik Purnima, thousands of pilgrims gather here. This time of year also coincides with the world-famous Pushkar Camel Fair.

Manimahesh Lake is located at an altitude of 13,000 feet in the Chamba district. The lake lies at the base of the Manimahesh Kailash Peak, which is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva. The lake’s shimmering waters mirror the snow-clad peak. The annual Manimahesh Yatra, held during August–September, draws thousands of pilgrims who trek through rugged terrain to take a holy dip in its icy waters.

The lake is named after Goddess Renuka, mother of Lord Parashurama. Did you know that Renuka Lake is the largest natural lake in Himachal Pradesh? As per legends, when Renuka Devi’s life was taken, the gods transformed her into this lake, immortalising her maternal spirit. There is also the popular Renuka Fair in November, where devotees bathe in the lake and carry out a symbolic reunion of Parashurama and Renuka’s idols.

Nestled amidst seven snow-capped peaks, Hemkund is one of the holiest sites for Sikhs and Hindus alike. The lake is located at an altitude of 15,200 feet, and is flanked by the revered Gurudwara Sri Hemkund Sahib, dedicated to Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru. It is believed that Guru Gobind Singh meditated here in a previous incarnation. Hindus also associate the site with Lakshmana, who is believed to have performed penance by the lake

Also called Changu Lake, Tsomgo is located at an elevation of over 12,000 feet above sea level. Tsomgo Lake in East Sikkim is a glacial lake revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. Local monks believe the lake to be a living oracle. As for the Hindus, devotees of Lord Shiva also revere it as sacred, performing rituals during festivals.

Situated in the picturesque hill town of Nainital, this emerald-green lake is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. According to Hindu mythology, the eye (nain) of Goddess Sati fell here, giving the lake its name. The Naina Devi Temple is located near the northern shore, and it draws thousands of devotees each year.
