HD mode unlocked! Good AQI levels refresh the city
What changed in Pune’s air?
According to naturalist Saee Gundawar, the improvement is largely weather-driven. “Pune is almost like a bowl surrounded by hills. So, when wind activity is low, pollutants from vehicles and construction just stay suspended over the city. Over the past few days, stronger winds have helped disperse that particulate matter. The air is also getting warmer and less dense, so pollutants don’t linger the same way. Technically, pollution hasn’t disappeared — it’s just been blown away because the weather is currently working in our favour.”
AQI levels:
300-400+ (Severe) In January
Below 50 (Good) At the end of February
Clear skies, sharp visibility, easier breathing
Online, residents have responded with equal parts relief and disbelief. On X, users joked that Pune had suddenly switched to “HD mode,” while others posted photos of unusually crisp skylines and starry nights. "Crazy how Pune AQI magically got clean," wrote one, while another added, “Never seen such a clear Pune sky.” The mood: pleasantly stunned.
“I just said it to a friend today that the sky looks so much bluer than I've seen in a long time. The visibility particularly has become so much clearer. I have always found a clear and blue sky more cheery and calming.” - Samruddhi More, a psychologist
For those constantly commuting, the shift has been tangible. Animator Sanchit Kelkar, who frequently travels between Mumbai and Pune, says the change hit mid-journey, "Usually, you’re dealing with so much dust on that stretch, but this time it just felt different. It didn’t feel like a change in the road — the air felt cleaner on my face. I feel like I’ve been looking forward to leaving home more and more in the last few days.” The big question, though, is will this last? For now, Pune is breathing easier. But experts caution that this clarity is weather-assisted, not pollution-proof. When wind patterns shift or temperatures drop again, the city could just as quickly slip back into murkier territory. Bottom line is - Enjoy the blue skies while you can.
“The sky has just been so much clearer and it caught my eye immediately. Even though it's summer, there’s this cool breeze and it actually feels easier to breathe. The visibility is so high now — everything feels in focus.” - Atharva Naik, a destination coordinator
