Common words you'll never hear from the British Royal Family

The British Royal Family is best known for their graceful and pleasing appearances in public. While they not only have the obligation to follow age-old protocols and traditions, they must also refrain from using certain words and expressions that are very common to the general public. In a recent report, the Queen has also banned some words from the royal vocabulary to keep the members of the royal family from sounding 'banal'.

Mum and dad are two of the most common terms used to call our parents. However, as surprising and childish as it may seem, the royal family must always refer to their parents as 'mummy' and 'daddy'.

If you're in the company of a royal member, you must never utter the word 'tea' in front of them. In many parts of the U.K., tea is referred to the evening meal that takes place between 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.. However, the word is only used amongst the working class people. The elite class and/or the royal family call this meal dinner or supper.

As polite as it may seem, 'pardon' is not the word to say in front of a British royal. Instead, you’re supposed to say, “Sorry?” or even, “Sorry, what?”. However, you can always nod and smile to evade the trouble.

'Toilet' is a word with French origins and while it may seem very trivial to all of us, none of the royal family members can use it in the Queen's presence. One is only allowed to use the words lavatory or the loo, if and when they need to use the bathroom.

'Perfume' is a word considered to be a part of the middle class lexicon. When the royal family talks of different fragrances, they prefer to call it scent.

Another term considered to be a lower class word amongst the elite is 'portion'. While discussing the portion sizes of a meal, one must always use 'helping sizes' to refer to it, especially when you're in the presence of a royal family member.

Post- meal sweet treats are not called desserts by the British Royal Family. While we call it by that name, the royals prefer to call them 'pudding' - even when they're not pudding in their real essence.

For the British population 'lounge' is a common word used to describe a living space. However, for the British Royal Family, 'sitting room' or 'drawing room' is a more preferred word.
