5 ways to respond with confidence when being disrespected

Being disrespected can leave people feeling angry, embarrassed or powerless. But confidence isn’t about yelling louder or “winning” the argument, it’s about responding in a way that protects your self-respect without losing emotional control. Being confident means handling the situation in such a manner that while your dignity is preserved, you do not become emotionally unstable. Whatever kind of person disrespects you, it is crucial to deal with him or her in a particular manner. Here are five confident ways to handle disrespect:

2/7

Do not act on impulse but stay calm

The biggest sign of confidence is always being able to maintain your calm despite the disrespect. Many people tend to react instantly by yelling, raising their voices, and even resorting to sarcasm. However, such behavior usually results in aggravating the situation. It is much better to take a moment before answering to remain calm. This way, one will be more likely to get the point across while preserving their dignity.

3/7

Communicate your boundaries effectively

Being confident means knowing how to express yourself in relation to what you accept and what you do not. One should confront the disrespectful individual in order to stop mocking, insulting, and crossing the boundary again and again. It does not turn the person into a difficult individual or a jerk but demonstrates respect for oneself. All that is required is an assertive and strong tone of voice.

4/7

Pose a question that will make them think

In place of responding to insults with more insults, one may respond to an insult in a way that does not give much space for insults to be thrown around. The person can simply use a composed question as a way to draw the focus back onto what he or she was doing. Such questions include “What do you mean by that?” or “Why do you say that?”. This makes people reconsider themselves and helps the speaker remain dignified in all the situations.

5/7

Know when to leave

All the insults that people receive cannot be addressed. In certain cases, one may have to leave because there is no sense in continuing talking to someone who intends to hurt them anyway. It takes an emotionally intelligent person to know how to protect himself and not get involved in any senseless argument.

6/7

Respond with dignity, not pride

There is a distinction between defending oneself and attempting to demean another person in retaliation. Dignity results from the manner in which you speak without degrading yourself into an insult or personal attack. A calm reaction tends to be more effective than aggression. By responding with dignity rather than pride, one demonstrates power, maturity, and grace under pressure.
