Keeping your aquarium pristine can feel like a full-time job

Algae creeps in, uneaten food settles, and suddenly your crystal-clear tank looks more like a swamp. But what if you could recruit a team of aquatic janitors to help with the dirty work? Good news: you can! Certain fish and invertebrates are natural-born cleaners, munching on algae, leftover food, and detritus, helping to maintain a healthier environment for your aquatic pets.

2/8

Bristlenose Pleco

Bristlenose Plecos are small, armored catfish known for their algae-eating prowess. Growing to about 4–5 inches, they're perfect for most home aquariums. These peaceful bottom-dwellers spend their days scouring surfaces for algae, helping to keep your tank clean.

3/8

Siamese algae eater

Siamese Algae Eaters are active fish that excel at consuming various types of algae, including the stubborn black beard algae. They can grow up to 6 inches and are best suited for larger tanks. These fish are generally peaceful and can be a great addition to a community aquarium.

4/8

Otocinclus catfish

Often referred to as "Otos," these tiny catfish are excellent at cleaning soft green algae from plant leaves and glass surfaces. They thrive in groups and are ideal for smaller, planted tanks. Their gentle nature makes them compatible with a variety of tank mates.

5/8

Corydoras catfish

Corydoras, or "Cory Cats," are bottom-dwelling fish that help clean up uneaten food and debris from the substrate. They are social creatures that prefer to be in groups and are known for their peaceful temperament. While they don't eat algae, their scavenging habits contribute to overall tank cleanliness.

6/8

Flagfish

Flagfish are known for their appetite for hair algae, making them a valuable addition to tanks struggling with this issue. They are hardy fish that can adapt to various water conditions. However, they can be a bit nippy, so it's essential to choose tank mates carefully.

7/8

Chinese algae eater

Chinese Algae Eaters are effective at cleaning algae, especially when young. However, as they mature, they can become territorial and may not be suitable for all community tanks. They require ample space and should be housed with compatible species.

8/8

Rainbow and redtail sharks

These "sharks" are not true sharks but are named for their body shape. They are scavengers that help clean up excess food and can also consume some algae. However, they can be territorial, so it's best to keep only one in a tank and ensure it's large enough to accommodate their activity.
