7 fish that make your aquarium instantly Instagrammable

Aquariums are slowly becoming that one corner of the house everyone wants to personalise. And the trend is shifting in a very interesting direction. People are no longer choosing only the usual fish. They want species that look different, have unique colours, add some movement to the tank and make the whole setup feel lively.

Tanks are especially popular because they are easier to manage and don’t demand too much effort. If you are planning to set up a new tank or want to upgrade your current one, here are seven unique fish that can bring fresh energy to your aquarium.

Disclaimer: This article is based on information sourced from aquarist guides and online resources. The Times of India has not independently verified the care requirements or behaviours of the fish mentioned. Availability may vary by region, and some species could be restricted in certain areas. Readers are advised to check local regulations and consult experts before purchasing or setting up an aquarium.

GloFish Danio

GloFish Danios are like tiny moving lights in the tank. They come in bright red, green, orange, blue and purple. Their colours come naturally through genetics and stay bright.

They eat simple foods like tropical flakes and frozen meaty bites. These fish prefer staying in small groups and get along well with peaceful tankmates. If you want instant colour and movement, these little fish do the job without any effort.

3/8

Golden Wonder Killifish

Golden Wonder Killifish stand out instantly with their mix of yellow, blue and orange. They come from freshwater and brackish areas in Africa and are known for being hardy.

They enjoy tanks with soft, slightly acidic water and good plant cover. Since they are carnivores, they love live foods like tubifex, white worms and brine shrimp. They also eat frozen and flake foods. They are simple to care for and look lovely in planted setups.

4/8

American Flagfish

The American Flagfish is one of those fish that looks good and also helps around the tank. Its red and creamy green stripes along with shiny speckles give it a unique look.

They stay comfortable in community tanks or small ponds. They prefer tanks with thick plants and floating leaves. Their diet includes live foods, frozen meaty items and tropical flakes. If your tank doesn’t have much algae, adding algae wafers is important for them.

5/8

Indian Glassfish

Indian Glassfish have a clear, almost transparent body that makes them look very different from other fish. They come from clean forest streams and like living in groups.

They need good oxygen flow, strong filtration and open swimming space. They are peaceful but may eat very tiny fish. They eat flakes, pellets and fresh or frozen foods. Their see through look adds a calm and interesting touch to any tank.

6/8

Peacock Gudgeon

Peacock Gudgeons are small, colourful and very easygoing. They look great in planted or community tanks and settle in quickly.

They also show cute breeding behaviour. They lay eggs in decorated areas and the male guards the eggs until they hatch. Their food includes flakes, freeze dried items and frozen options like bloodworms and brine shrimp.

7/8

Bristlenose Plecostomus

Bristlenose Plecostomus is a peaceful bottom dwelling catfish that comes in colours like black and albino. They love tanks with strong filtration, good oxygen and hiding spots made from rocks and driftwood.

They eat algae, leftover food and flakes. You can add algae wafers to keep them strong. They also breed in home tanks, and it is the male who guards the eggs and fry. Their behaviour at the bottom of the tank adds a nice balance to the whole setup.

8/8

Bolivian Ram

Bolivian Rams, also known as Red Rams or Butterfly Rams, are gentle and social. They look best in larger tanks with open space, lots of plants and caves for spawning. They form lifelong pairs and take turns caring for the fry after the eggs are laid.

They need someone with a bit of experience because they require more care. They eat flakes, frozen food, freeze dried bloodworms and live brine shrimp.
