In a world where screens and apps rule, you might be surprised to know that some of the industry’s top leaders don’t just restrict technology use by their kids; they go to great lengths to shield them from excessive use, distractions, and harmful content. Here are the ways big names in the industry are raising kids to thrive in the digital world:
Bill Gates, who is the co-founder of Microsoft, is well known for limiting the role of technology in his home. He once shared how he didn’t let his kids use cell phones until the age of 14. “We don’t have cell phones at the table when we are having a meal. We didn’t give our kids cell phones until they were 14, and they complained other kids got them earlier,” Bill Gates said years ago.

Mark Zuckerberg is quite particular about his kids’ screen time. He allows them to stay in touch with their family via video calls but doesn’t want them to be passive consumers of content. He wants his kids to spend less time in front of screens and do something better with themselves.
YouTube CEO Neal Mohan revealed how he limits the use of social media and smartphones for his kids. “We do limit their time on YouTube and other platforms and other forms of media.
On weekdays, we tend to be more strict; on weekends, we tend to be less so. We’re not perfect by any stretch,” Mohan said in a TikTok video posted by Time magazine.
YouTube’s former CEO Susan Wojcicki also restricts her children from browsing videos on the app or using their phones too much. “I allow my younger kids to use YouTube Kids, but I limit the amount of time that they’re on it,” Wojcicki told CNBC in 2019.
In a viral interaction with a journalist, Steve Jobs revealed how he restricted his kids from using mobile phones. In 2010, he said, “They haven’t used it. We limit how much technology our kids use at home.”
