PTM Checklist: Don’t walk in unprepared

A Parent-Teacher Meeting (PTM) is a very important occasion when the parent can get the required information regarding his/her child's progress, behavior, development, etc. In some cases, parents do not prepare for this meeting at all and, consequently, lose precious time to learn something new. Properly prepared and organized PTM will bring numerous benefits for the child. Many experts agree that one must be properly prepared to attend such a meeting.

2/6

Prepare in advance

Prior to attending a PTM, it is necessary to look through the notebook of a child, his or her report cards, feedback from the teachers, homework assignments, and everything else related to the child's studies. Thus, you will know the problems and strengths of your child. Moreover, the teacher will realize that you are always interested in the progress of your child.

3/6

Write down your questions

During the PTM, a lot of things can happen unexpectedly, and, as a result, the parent can forget some of his/her questions. To avoid such awkward moments, you can prepare a list of important issues you want to discuss with the teacher in advance. Thus, your PTM will become really useful and beneficial.

4/6

Do not pay excessive attention to the marks

Marks and grades play a crucial role in the development of every child but they are definitely not the only thing you should talk about during the PTM. You should also discuss your child's behaviour in class, his/her participation in classes, socialization abilities, etc. Remember that the development of a child involves not only learning. Therefore, one should also think about the emotional and social development of a child.

5/6

Accept teachers' criticism positively

It often happens that parents react negatively to teachers' negative criticism about their children. They start shouting or trying to defend their child. It is wrong. Instead of it, you should try to be more active and proactive in this situation because this kind of behavior will create a good atmosphere for discussions between you and the teacher.

6/6

Inform teachers of your child's condition

A teacher observes the child in a completely different environment. Therefore, it is always important to let the teacher know about changes in the behavior of your child, about his/her health conditions, and so on. Effective communication is very important in this case.
