How Kate Hudson manages co-parenting

Actor Kate Hudson, who shares 3 kids with 3 different dads, makes co-parenting look doable as well as fulfilling.

Her love for her little ones is all over her Instagram feed – from pictures of holidays like thanksgiving to having fun on vacations.

Carving her own form of family, she calls it a "unit" and shared in The Sunday Times how she manages co-parenting with three different dads.

All about her kids and their dads

Her children range from just post-toddlerhood to adulthood. Hudson has her daughter Rani Rose, age 4, with her fiance Danny Fujikawa. Her middle child is 11 years old, who she shares with Matt Bellamy, her ex-fiance.

Her adult child Ryder, is 18 years old, who she co-parents with ex-husband Chris Robinson.

Reestablishing a new kind of love with the co-parent

Wondering how the "unit" works? Hudson says the secret lies in reestablishing a new kind of love with the co-parent, who you once loved.

She explained, “For me it’s like, you loved this person. That doesn’t just go away…you can have an amazing time with an ex-partner because you’re really only focused on the love of your child.”

Dash of humor helps!

Hudson has reflected on previous interviews on how she raises her kids vs her own upbringing, in which she didn’t know her own dad.

She also approaches her situation with humor. She said in another interview, “I’ve got multiple dads, I’ve got kids all over the place.”

“It might not look traditional from the outside, but on the inside, I feel like we’re killing it,” she said.

Increase in co-parenting in the US

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2020, only 70% of children lived with two parents. These numbers have gone down in the last few decades. As per data, in 1968, 85% of children lived with both their parents.

Now, with nearly a third of children living with one parent, there is more and more need to increase discussions around meaningful co-parenting.

What studies say about co-parenting

According to a study, the quality of how you and your ex-partner co-parent is linked to the quality of the relationship you had when you were together.

Other factors that can matter include “re-partnering,” and whether the separated parents have more children in their new partnerships, if any.

As per the study, women who had additional children with a new partner had better co-parenting outcomes with their original partner, than men did.
