Celebrities who opened up about miscarriages

Miscarriages, though common, are no doubt a painful experience.

A missing heartbeat, abnormal hormonal levels or trauma - anything can lead to a miscarriage. According to experts, about 10 to 15 percent of pregnancies end up in loss. While statistics run high, this doesn't mean that it is easy to cope up and find support for the loss.

A lot of couples suffer from this, alone and this extends to celebrities as well. Behind the constant flashes and busy shoots, finding help or opening up can get hard.

Miscarriage is a crucial time when parents need support, open up the conversation and not suffer in silence. Here are ten brave celebrities who opened up about their problems in public space and threw light on the dialogue:

2/7

Kajol

Kajol who is a mother of two, Nysa and Yug, recently opened up about going through multiple miscarriages, in the middle of her busy careers which proved out to be a testing time for the couple. Opening up, Kajol shared: "Over time, we began planning to have kids. I was pregnant during K3G but had a miscarriage. I was in the hospital that day–the film had done so well, but it wasn’t a happy time. I had another miscarriage after that–it was tough. But eventually, it worked out–we had Nysa & Yug & our family’s complete."

Ajay Devgan also revealed that the pregnancy was an ectopic one, adding that Kajol's life was in danger so they had to make decisions right away. "Yes, we have lost our baby, but we have no regrets. it was an ectopic pregnancy. "

3/7

Gauri Khan

As adorable is their love story, Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan are also parents to three adorable kids- Aryan, Suhana and AbRam (who was welcomed via surrogacy). Before this, the couple experienced a troubled pregnancy, which ultimately led to Gauri Khan miscarrying the baby. Getting through it was very difficult for the couple:

"Before Aryan, there were some miscarriages but then when he was born, a couple of days were difficult. Suhana was a girl so that was exciting, as Gauri and I, both of us always wanted a girl first. But it happened second."

4/7

Kiran Rao

Kiran Rao has always been vocal about her IVF cycles before her son Azad was born. Explaining the fact that their journey wasn't always perfect, Aamir opened up about the struggle when they lost their unborn baby in the womb: “Kiran and I lost our baby. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to avert a miscarriage. The last 2 months have been a struggle for us. Ki and I need time to heal.” The two are proud parents now.

5/7

Priscilla Chan

Founder of Facebook and social media conglomerate, Mark has three children with wife Priscilla. While the couple keeps sharing photos of their adorable children, the two opened up about the pain associated with miscarriages, which is seldom not discussed in the open:

“We’ve been trying to have a child for a couple of years and have had three miscarriages along the way. You feel so hopeful when you learn you’re going to have a child. You start making plans, and then they’re gone. It’s a lonely experience.”

“Most people don’t discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you—as if you’re defective or did something to cause this. So you struggle on your own,” he said. “In today’s open and connected world, discussing these issues doesn’t distance us; it brings us together. It creates understanding and tolerance, and it gives us hope.”

6/7

Beyonce

Popular musician, Beyonce, a mother to three now penned an emotional tribute to the loved one she lost along the way-and how it fueled a need to find her own self through the tough turmoil. She opened up, adding that the lost baby made her realize that she needed to mother herself before she could be a mom to someone else:

“I began to search for deeper meaning when life began to teach me lessons I didn’t know I needed. Success looks different to me now. I learned that all pain and loss is, in fact, a gift. Having miscarriages taught me that I had to mother myself before I could be a mother to someone else, she said. Then I had Blue, and the quest for my purpose became so much deeper. I died and was reborn in my relationship, and the quest for self became even stronger. It’s difficult for me to go backward.”

7/7

Michelle Obama

The former first lady of the United States talked about her conceiving troubles in her memoir, "Becoming". The outpour and her feelings resonated with a lot of women, globally. As she writes, the miscarriage left her feeling "physically uncomfortable.":

"I felt like I failed because I didn’t know how common miscarriages were because we don’t talk about them. We sit in our own pain, thinking that somehow we’re broken. I think it’s the worst thing that we do to each other as women, not share the truth about our bodies and how they work, and how they don’t work.”
