Love eating walnuts? Then soak them for boosting their efficacy

Winter is here, and it is the season to enjoy all good food, but in our love for gluttony and overindulgence, we often ignore our heart health, which may lead to serious health concerns. However, a simple addition to your daily diet may help in better heart health management that can naturally help in reducing LDL levels by improving HDL levels that are essential for health. Well, we are talking about walnuts, which are often relished in trail mixes or consumed on-the-go, but do you know what actually happens when you soak this wonder nut in water overnight? Here’s all you need to know about walnuts…

2/6

Why walnuts?

There’s no denying that walnuts are extensively consumed in trail mixes, desserts and are often consumed as a healthy snack. But what makes it a perfect addition to the daily diet is its nutrient-dense composition, which is naturally rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid that constitutes about 2.5g per ounce, apart from that this polyunsaturated fats like linoleic acid, monounsaturated fats, 4g per ounce protein, 2g fiber, along with minerals like magnesium (45mg), phosphorus (98mg), copper (0.45mg), manganese (1mg), and smaller amounts of potassium, zinc, iron, and calcium, plus antioxidants like ellagic acid, melatonin, vitamin E (0.7mg), folate (28mcg), and B6 (0.15mg).

What happens when you soak this nut?

Soaking reduces phytic acid and tannins, which bind minerals like iron, zinc, and calcium, thereby boosting their absorption. This process also activates enzymes that aid digestion of proteins and fibers.Soaked walnuts promote better digestion and nutrient uptake compared to raw ones. They support brain health through antioxidants, aid weight management by increasing satiety, and reduce inflammation via omega-3s and polyphenols, which further enhances mineral absorption and benefits plant-based diets.

4/6

How does it improve heart health?

Magnesium, potassium, and arginine in walnuts helps relax blood vessels by supporting healthy blood pressure, on the other hand polyphenols, vitamin E, and melatonin act as potent antioxidants to combat oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction that lead to atherosclerosis. In fact, consuming walnuts daily after soaking , which enhances diastolic heart function, lowers resting heart rate, and improves overall cardiometabolic markers like blood sugar and weight control. Although, soaking reduces phytic acid and may slightly enhance mineral bioavailability such as iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium and enzyme activation for better digestion.

5/6

How does it help in boosting heart health?

Soaked walnuts promote better digestion and nutrient uptake compared to raw ones. They support brain health through antioxidants, aid weight management by increasing satiety, and reduce inflammation via omega-3s and polyphenols. Enhanced mineral absorption benefits plant-based diets. In fact, ALA in walnuts lowers LDL cholesterol and raises HDL, preventing arterial plaque buildup. Consumers show lower diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and better diastolic functions. Apart from that the Polyphenols, magnesium, and melatonin further reduce oxidative stress and blood pressure.

What studies say

According to a study published in Does 'activating' nuts affect nutrient bioavailability? Published in the National Library of Medicine it was mentioned that soaking resulted in lower mineral concentrations, especially for chopped nuts, and did not improve phytate: mineral molar ratios. Long-term prospective of plant-based diet patterns include nuts, such as walnuts that help predict lower blood pressure, lower serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, greater endothelial function, when consumed after soaking.
