Snacks to keep the liver healthy

The liver, often referred to as the body’s powerhouse, plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health and vitality. It’s responsible for detoxifying the blood, metabolizing nutrients, and producing essential proteins and enzymes that aid in digestion and clotting. Hence, it is important to take extra care of the liver, and in this process, choosing the right kind of food plays a key role. In a recent post on Instagram, Dr. Joseph Salhab, a gastroenterologist, talked about 7 snack combinations that are easily available and can impact the smooth functioning of the liver. He also shared the reasons why these snacking options are beneficial. Let's find out the gastroenterologist's recommendations:

2/8

Lime plus watermelon

As per Dr Salhab, lime is high in citrulline, antioxidants, and vitamin C, and watermelon helps the liver manage oxidative stress and maintain healthy blood flow.

3/8

Sourdough plus avocado

According to him, sourdough with avocado combines gut-friendly fermentation and healthy fats, improving the way the liver handles sugar and stores fat.

4/8

Kimchi plus sweet potato

As per his post, the combination of kimchi and sweet potato pairs probiotics and resistant starch to strengthen the gut-liver connection and lower the risk of fat buildup in the liver.

5/8

Dark chocolate plus berries

As per his post, they both are a powerful source of flavonoids that help the liver resist scarring and maintain healthy blood vessels.

6/8

Walnuts plus almonds

As per Dr Salhab, both the nuts are packed with omega-3 fats and vitamin E, which are proven to lower liver fat and protect liver cells from oxidative damage.

7/8

Kiwi plus Greek yoghurt

According to Dr Salhab, eating kiwi Greek yoghurt boosts vitamin C, potassium, and probiotics, which are all critical for keeping liver metabolism and energy production running strong.

8/8

Apple plus cinnamon

He also recommends eating apples with cinnamon. He says, "Apples are packed with fibre and antioxidants shown to protect against liver fat buildup, while cinnamon provides anti-inflammatory compounds that support liver resilience.”
