What is rice water and how to use it in daily diet

Cooked rice water, also known as maand, is a starchy liquid left after boiling rice. It is a nutritious and healthy drink that has been used in traditional households for generations. It is proven to be rich in vitamins, minerals, and natural starch, which gives quick energy and keeps the body hydrated. In summers, many people drink cooked rice water as a soothing drink during hot weather, illness, or fatigue because it is light on the stomach and easy to digest. Did you know you can actually make it a protein-rich drink in three simple steps? Scroll down to find out.

How to make high-protein rice water drink

Ingredients: 2 cups cooked rice water, 1/2 cup curd, 2 tsp sattu, 1 tbsp roasted flax seeds powder, and salt and pepper or jaggery
Method
Step 1: Add rice water to a mixing bowl.
Step 2: To this, add curd, sattu, and flax seeds powder. Whisk well.
Step 3: Add seasoning as per taste and preference. Serve fresh.

Other ways to use cooked rice water: Use for kneading the dough

One can also use rice water instead of plain water to knead dough for rotis, parathas, or even puris. It is said to make the dough softer and also adds nutrition to it.

4/8

Use in daliya or oatmeals

Instead of plain water, use rice water to make porridge of daliya or oatmeal. It gives a creamy texture without using milk and makes the meal lighter on the stomach. It is rich in starch which makes the dish even more nutritious and quite filling.

5/8

Use in dips and chutneys

While making chutneys, one can replace curd or plain water with this starchy water. It gives a silky texture, blends the ingredients smoothly and also adds a subtle sweet aftertaste that compliments the spiciness of the chutney.

6/8

Use for idli, dosa or chilla batter

Rice water can also help support the fermentation of batters like dosa, idli, or cheela. All you need to do is, mix a little amount of whey into the dough and let it rest. It helps the batter rise better and gives the final dish a nice texture and lightness.

7/8

Use for making rice kanji

It can be converted into a comforting side dish that goes well with rice or roti as well. All you need to do is add a ghee and cumin tadka to it, and season with salt and pepper. It is good for gut health.

8/8

Use in gravies

One can also use the water in curries and gravies. So, in case you are running short on time in making a thick curry for veggies, simply add a small portion of rice water in place of regular water and your dish will be ready in a jiffy.
