How to control cholesterol and diabetes

Indian kitchens have been a host to multiple spices and ingredients that help in keeping us fit and healthy. The use of different spices in all our meals is one of the primary reasons why Indians are said to have a robust immune system. According to Shammi Agarwal, MD Pansari Group who is also a health enthusiast, "Spices play an integral role in keeping us fit. Most of the diets we follow have spices as an essential part. For example turmeric milk, cinnamon water, jeera water and fenugreek soaked water are mostly given to give a healthy kick start to the day." However, with the change in diets and food preferences, lifestyle diseases have made their way into our lives. To help keep lifestyle diseases like heart ailments and diabetes at bay, the following spices have been used traditionally. (Image: istock)

Fenugreek Seeds

The high fibre content we get from fenugreek seeds helps the body absorb fewer carbohydrates. It also encourages lower blood sugar levels by slowing down digestion and improving the body's glucose tolerance levels. (Image: istock)

Basil

Besides improving the body's immunity levels, Basil also helps strengthen the body and keep its blood sugar levels in check.

While new diets and food trends are fun and delicious to indulge into, it is essential to remember to include these spices and certain traditionally Indian meals in your weekly meal plan. (Image: istock)
