6 quick and simple tips to extend the shelf life of Amla (Indian Gooseberry)

One such food item that is a winter favorite is amla, also known as Indian gooseberry. It is rich in vitamin C and other nutrients that help boost immunity,digestion, support liver health, and regulate blood sugar. They are used to make chutney, pickles, murabba, and even halwa. But the sad part is that they are available only for 3–4 months. So, what to do? Well, here we have compiled six quick and simple tips that one can use to store them for months and extend the shelf life of this superfood, which has a sour as well as a sweet, pungent, bitter, and astringent taste.
Here are some simple tips to store amla:
Store in a cool and dry place: Amla can be stored at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, in a cool and dry place. This will help prevent the fruit from spoiling quickly and will increase its shelf life.

Store in airtight containers: You can also store amla in airtight containers to prevent moisture from entering and to keep amla fresh for a longer time. As per experts, storing amla in a plastic or glass container with a tight-fitting lid is effective.
Soak in salt water: Amla can also be preserved in salt water. Simply boil water and add salt to it. Once the water cools down, add the amla balls to it and store them in an airtight container. It keeps the amla fresh for 4–8 months.

Make powder: You can also dry them under direct sunlight after de-seeding and then blend them into a fine powder. This powder can be used for cooking and garnishing purposes.
Make candies: This can be used to preserve them and use amlas as mouth fresheners. All you need to do is boil the amlas, then sundry them. Next, add a generous amount of sugar and preserve them in an airtight jar for months.
Freeze them: Amla can be stored in the freezer for up to 6–8 months. All you need to do is cut the fruit into small pieces, remove the seeds, store them in an airtight container, and then put the container in the freezer. This will help retain the nutrients and flavor of amla throughout the year.
