Trailblazing celeb brides who went beyond red

For generations, the shade of red has been synonymous with a traditional Indian wedding. Looking absolutely ethereal and pious, the bridal red lehenga indeed holds a symbolic charm and can never go out of fashion. But then a new wave came in, where this quintessential colour was replaced with softer pastel and ivory notes. If you think that Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma started the trend, then you’re mistaken, as these OG celeb brides already did it before her.

Mira Rajput Kapoor

Long before the trend started across the country, Mira Rajput, who married Shahid Kapoor in 2015, chose a delicate pastel-pink lehenga with a shoulder-length blouse and an elegant dupatta. Despite the lack of media attention at the time, brides still take notes from her look, as she was one of the first Bollywood divas who chose pastel pink over red. She opted for a mild touch of makeup and looked absolutely stunning.

Karisma Kapoor

Karisma Kapoor was another actress who started the trend of pink bridal wear before Anushka Sharma. She wore a soft pink lehenga set featuring intricate silver embellishment. The diva opted for a waist-length matching corset-style blouse with a subtle flared wedding lehenga skirt and a dupatta over her head. She was heavily decked up with intricate jewellery and was also seen wearing traditional chooda and statement kalire.

Soha Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan’s younger sister, Soha Ali Khan, tied the knot with actor Kunal Khemu in 2015. For the wedding, Soha looked resplendent in an off-white lehenga paired with a beautiful contrasting organza dupatta. She completed the look with a beautiful maang tikka and traditional passa. On the other hand, Kunal Khemu was spotted in a stunning white and gold sherwani with a luxurious silk safa.

Kareena Kapoor Khan

Kareena Kapoor Khan surprised everyone in 2012 when she decked up in a traditional sharara look for her big day, which was actually a beautiful heirloom piece. Kareena wore her mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore’s nikaah sharara, which the actress wore in 1962. This beautiful rustic orange sharara set with a mint-green border was decorated with intricate zardosi and gota work. It was refurbished by designer Ritu Kumar. It originally belonged to Sharmila Tagore’s mother-in-law, the Begum of Bhopal, and was a Bhopali joda.

Konkona Sen Sharma

Konkona Sen Sharma’s wedding look in 2010 was far from a classic red Banarasi saree. The diva wore a beautiful tant saree dipped in silver and blue hues from her grandmother’s collection. She also opted for her grandmother’s heirloom jewellery and completed the look with a subtle matching dupatta. Her understated and elegant look focused on heritage rather than ostentation and perfectly matched her personality.
