Pongal is an important festival celebrated in and around Tamil Nadu. It is a four-day festival. Pongal is a harvest festival and it celebrates new crops. Pongal is not a simple harvest festival, it is a tribute to the abundance and bounty nature offers. The festival is celebrated around 14-15th January every year. The date is more or less fixed. From this day onwards the sun starts moving towards the North. The festival brings farmers together to give thanks for abundant crops like rice, sugarcane, and spices. Families light bonfires, draw beautiful kolams at doorsteps, and cook the dish which shares its name with the festival- Pongal. It is like Kheer and is made using newly harvested rice, lentils, jaggery, and cardamom, simmered for hours on low flame.
The first day of the festival is called Bhogi Pongal. Homes fill with crackling bonfires where old clothes and junk are burnt away, symbolizing renewal. Women create colorful rangoli with rice flour and flower petals, symbolically inviting good fortune.It's a ritual of letting go, making space for fresh starts amid chants and clanging utensils.Thai Pongal is celebrated on the second day and it is the heart of the celebration.
Early morning, Pongal is cooked in earthen pots and prayers are offered to the sun god. Cattle get a royal bath, their horns are painted bright and are garlanded with flowers and turmeric. Jallikattu, the daring bull-taming sport in rural areas is performed on this day. Mattu Pongal is the third day of Pongal. This day is specially dedicated to livestock. Domestic animals like cows and bulls are given special importance and are offered special meals. In many parts of Tamil Nadu, farmers tie mango leaves to their horns and parade them. It is a way to thank these humble animals who assist in harvest. The final day is called Kanum Pongal. This day is for family outings and get togethers. People go for picnic by rivers or fields, fly kites and play games. Pongal isn't just food and fun, it's deeply spiritual. People visit temple and offer prayers to God.
