Is dark chocolate good for hair?

It is hard to believe that a delicious chocolate bar can help in the process of hair growth. We normally think of chocolate as an indulgence, but the truth is that this sweet delicacy is filled with powerful nutritional benefits that deal with hair loss issues. Dark chocolate contains 70% cacao, which goes beyond being just a delicious treat. Brimming with fatty acids and vitamins that moisturise hair strands and nourish the scalp, it also restores shine and contributes to healthier locks. How? Let’s take a look.

Brimming with antioxidants

Oxidative stress plays a big role in hair ageing, which leads to hair loss and premature greying. The antioxidants present in dark chocolate fight free radicals and prevent oxidative stress, slowing down the process of ageing and hair loss. Containing high levels of flavanols, it supports healthy hair growth and improves the overall blood flow, reducing our blood pressure level as well.

Rich in copper

Copper is required to nourish our hair follicles, and guess what? Dark chocolate bars have it. Copper plays an important role in the production of collagen, which is the protein supporting healthy, smooth, and strong hair. As our body does not produce copper naturally, we need to get it from our diet. Therefore, apply or intake dark chocolate to enjoy silkier, shinier, and stronger locks.

Prevents sun damage

Nutrients in dark chocolate not only boost hair growth but also improve the overall appearance and quality of your strands. From adding strength to protecting the scalp from harmful UV rays, each dark chocolate has the power to add strength, shine, and softness to each strand. It also keeps you away from scalp infections, leading to healthier hair.

DIY hair mask for voluminous and smooth strands

Step 1: Mash a ripe banana and add 4 cubes of melted dark chocolate.

Step 2: Add a teaspoon of honey, and once the mixture cools down, you can apply it to the length of your hair, but avoid the roots.
Step 3: Wrap your hair with a clutch, and after 45 minutes, wash it off with lukewarm water.
You can add half a cup of yoghurt instead of a banana for a voluminous look and follow the same ingredients and procedure.

Why only opt for dark chocolate?

Not all chocolate is created equal to be able to reap the benefits. Dark chocolate consists of solid cocoa with cocoa butter, a little sugar, and no milk. It is slightly bitter in taste because of the high cocoa and lower sugar composition, but it is the healthiest of all. Having approximately 80% cocoa solids, it is drier and chalkier in texture.
