Rice water for hair growth has become one of the most searched and used natural remedies in the beauty segment across the globe. What started as an ancient East Asian beauty ritual hundreds of years ago, mainly in Japan’s Heian period and the Red Yao tribe in China, is now religiously practised by people and is also scientifically proven. Rice water is genuinely believed to strengthen hair strands, improve overall shine, and reduce hair fall. But only if you use it correctly.

Rice water is mainly the starchy liquid left behind after soaking or boiling rice. It contains amino acids that strengthen the hair shaft and inositol, a carbohydrate that improves elasticity and reduces surface friction on your locks. It also has vitamin B complex, which supports scalp health, and minerals like zinc, magnesium, and tonnes of antioxidants, which protect the locks against environmental damage and support overall hair health.

If you’re doing it for the first time, then you need to simply soak ½ cup of uncooked rice in 3 cups of water and first rinse all the impurities. Add clean water and soak it for 30 minutes. Strain the water into a bowl and store it in a glass jar in the fridge for 2 days. But if you need a stronger version, then after the soaking method, leave the strained rice water at room temperature for 2 days. Once it turns sour, dilute it with 1 cup of water and use it. Fermentation increases the antioxidant level and lowers the pH level.

Always dilute the fermentation, as the concentrated formula will have tonnes of protein, which is not good for the scalp. Start with a scalp test, especially if you’re dealing with a sensitive scalp. Never skip the conditioner after spraying rice water, as it contains protein-like compounds, and the conditioning helps in balancing the moisture. Avoid everyday usage, as it will make your strands dry and brittle, and always follow it up with a scalp massage, as this is the part that boosts blood circulation and supports natural hair growth cycles.

Rice water for hair growth is a natural remedy that requires patience. From strengthening the strands to improving overall shine and reducing breakage, all can only be attained if the formula is used correctly. Many people skip this, but the key lies in proper dilution with limited frequency and a balanced protein with intense hydration. Avoid using spoilt rice water on your tresses. Do not ever leave it on overnight or expect instant hair growth. Understand that consistency matters more than intensity.
