5 haircare habits you need to take a break from this summer

Hair habits you must stop right away!

Summertime calls for carefree fun outings under the sun and deep dives in soothing water. But do you know that it can also be the most damaging season for your hair health? Those long hours of basking under the summer sunlight can leave your hair lacking lustre, strength, and volume. Making your hair health almost lifeless to look at, there’s still time to save your tresses by putting an end to these bad haircare habits this summer.

2/6

Step away from tight hairstyles

Sure, a game of badminton calls for your hair to be swept away from your face, but tying a tight ponytail or bun at all times in summer is not a good idea. Overly tight braids, buns, and ponytails pull on our strands, leading to breakage. During the summertime, when our hair becomes extra fragile from the excess heat, our cuticles cry for loose knots, open hair, and subtle braids. Therefore, steer clear of plastic elastics and hard clips from now onwards, and instead opt for silk or satin hair ties with cutesy bobby pins.

Stop overwashing your hair

We understand that sweat and summer go hand in hand, but washing your hair every day or every alternate day is not going to do any favours for the hair grease present on your scalp. Shampooing your strands often can strip off the necessary oils of your scalp that help your strands look shiny and feel strong. Twice a week, shampooing your hair is more than enough, followed by a conditioning session.

Avoid heat styling as much as you can

Summertimes are already hot enough to make the temperature go high on your scalp, leading to hair damage, sweat, and irritation. Don’t make the condition worse by using heat styling equipment. Instead of blow drying and flat ironing your hair often, start embracing your hair’s natural texture, and be creative in styling your hair naturally. Also, when your hair remains damp, reach out for styling creams or serums to get the desired texture for a limited time.

Stop taking dips with dry hair

While we love to take deep dives and spend some time in swimming pools for the day in summer, beware of the chlorine present in the water, which damages your hair and skin. Therefore, before going for your swimming lessons, apply a heavy layer of oil or serum, and then dive into the pool. Dry hair is highly porous and always seeks moisture; thus, when we dive right in with dry hair, our strands also absorb this drying, damaged water, making our hair see its worst state.

Protect your hair from the sun's rays

It may sound stupid to some, but the harsh UVA and UVB rays from the sun can lead to fading and drying out and require a protective layer. Try to top your head and hair strands with a stylish hat or glamorous silk scarf, or start using hair protection sunscreen that will protect your scalp, cuticles, and strands from drying out, with no signs of redness, itchiness, or irritation in the scalp.
