The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is a regional political party strongly based in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
During the partition in 1947, the All India Muslim League was disbanded and was succeeded by IUML.
IUML claims to have worked for the upliftment of the Muslim people in Kerala, especially the Muslim community in Malabar.
The party is the second biggest alliance partner of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala. IUML is also a part of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) at the national level.
The party currently has two members in the Parliament- ET Mohammed Basheer from Kerala's Ponnani and K Navas Kani from Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram in Lok Sabha and PV Abdul Wahab represents in the Rajya Sabha. The party has nineteen members in State Legislative Assemblies of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
In the upcoming assembly elections, IUML has been allotted 27 seats of the total 140 seats in the UDF alliance. For the first time, in a quarter of a century, IUML announced a woman among the list of its candidates for the April 6 Kerala Assembly polls.
The 2016 assembly election witnessed the defeat of the United Democratic Front which could only win 47 seats in the election. IUML had contested on 23 seats out of which it won 18.
