MUMBAI: CBI officials investigating the
Sheena Bora murder case recently questioned three cops who had been posted in Raigad when Bora's body was found there in 2012. The Raigad Police have faced independent probes after being accused of dereliction of duty and for failing to register a murder case back then.
Additional police commissioner RD Shinde, who was the then Raigad superintendent, declined to comment.
The others who were grilled include, Suresh Mirge, the then senior inspector and Pradeep Chavan who was the then sub-divisional officer in Pen district.
The trio were also brought face to face. In his statement given to the CBI in October, Mirge had said that he did not register an FIR immediately on the instructions of Shinde.
Mirge said that Shinde had told him over the phone to make an entry in the station diary first and then send the body samples for examination to JJ Hospital. Prakash Kokare, a police nayak who was posted at the Pen police station at the time of the incident, said that after the procedure was conducted and a pit was dug up and the body buried there. He further stated that he was sure that remains belonged to a woman as he had seen nail polish painted on fingernails.
"All staffers were in favour of registering a case under IPC Section 302 (murder) after observing the body, whereas Mirge did not agree with us. He told me that we should first lodge an FIR showing accidental death and then look into the matter," he added. Kokare further said that soon after Mirge had spoken to a senior officer on the phone, he ordered that an entry be made in the general diary.
