PM Modi South Africa Visit Live: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday set off on a three-day visit to South Africa to participate in the first-ever G20 Summit hosted on African soil.

During his stay in Johannesburg, he will also take part in the sixth IBSA Summit, being held on the sidelines of the G20 meetings.

“I will present India’s perspective at the Summit in line with our vision of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’,” Modi said in his departure statement.

US to attend but not participate in deliberations at G20 in South Africa
The United States will attend only the closing ceremony of this weekend’s G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg and will skip all formal deliberations, Washington confirmed in a statement late on Thursday.

South Africa is set to hand over the G20 Presidency to the US on Sunday, but had earlier indicated it might have to do so symbolically to an empty chair, following repeated threats from President Donald Trump that the US would not participate in the summit.

The confirmation came after a day of sharp remarks from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who appeared to criticise Trump without naming him directly. Speaking at the G20 Social Summit, Ramaphosa said, “It cannot be that a country’s geographical location or income level or army determines who has a voice and who is spoken down to. It basically means that there should be no bullying of one nation by another nation – we are all equal,” drawing loud applause from delegates.

However, Ramaphosa struck a more conciliatory tone by early evening. After an EU event on the sidelines of the summit, he announced that his government had received a formal notice from the US confirming attendance at the closing ceremony.

What to know about this weekend's G20 summit in South Africa that Trump is boycotting
Leaders from the Group of 20 countries will meet for a summit in South Africa this weekend without any US representatives after President Donald Trump announced a boycott over his widely rejected claims that the host country is persecuting its Afrikaner white minority.

Trump's decision to pull the United States — and himself — out of the talks in Johannesburg is likely to undermine the first G20 leaders' meeting in Africa, as well as South Africa's aim to push for progress on issues affecting poor countries, such as the impact of climate change, the cost of green energy transition and spiraling sovereign debt levels.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping also won't attend as he cuts back on international travel, meaning the heads of the world's two biggest economies will skip a meeting meant to bring developed and developing countries together to tackle pressing global issues.

A bridge between rich and developing nations
The G20 is a group of 19 countries that includes the richest but also the top developing economies in the world. The European Union and the African Union, which joined in 2023, are also members, making it now a group of 21.

It was formed in 1999 and unlike the Group of Seven, which only includes the richest democracies, it offers some developing countries a forum to raise their problems.

'Priorities identified by South Africa are aligned with those of India's G20 Presidency': MEA
Secretary (ER) of the Ministry of External Affairs, Sudhakar Dalela said that the South African Summit has an echo of the priorities recognised during the Indian presidency of the G20 Summit.
In a Special Briefing by MEA on Prime Minister's visit to South Africa, Dalela said that in this Summit, food security and disaster risk management are at the fore of priorities.

"The Johannesburg G20 Summit will mark the culmination of first cycle of 20 G20 Presidencies. The priorities identified by South Africa are aligned with those of India's G20 Presidency and that of Brazil, ensuring continuity in G20 discussions from the perspective of matters that are important to Global South," he said.

Dalela said that the presidency focuses on the issues of global south, thich has trickled down from the previous presidencies of the countries from the Global South.

"The Indian G20 Presidency had established a disaster risk reduction working group, signifying the importance India attaches to the matter, South African presidency has carried forward the work related to the disaster risk reduction and resilience as key priorities at its own presidency. Similarly, through the task force and food security that South African presidency has carried forward the dialogue on this important challenge as well. The South African presidency has in a way continued focus on issues of importance to global south," he said.

Priorities from the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration like digital public infrastructure, women-led development, the action plan to accelerate progress on SDGs, were carried forward in the Johannesburg Summit.

Leaders press on with G20 summit in South Africa that won't have US and Trump
Leaders and delegates from the world's richest nations and top developing countries are gathering this weekend for the Group of 20 summit in South Africa, an event overshadowed by the boycott of US President Donald Trump and his administration.

Africa's first G20 summit will see representatives of 42 countries, but not the United States, a founding member of the group and one that's supposed to be taking over its rotating presidency in Johannesburg.

Trump has denounced South Africa's leadership of the G20 and said he would not attend, citing alleged discrimination of the country's white farmers. South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has said he's told Trump that information about the alleged persecution of Afrikaners is “completely false.”

Last Friday, Trump also said that no US officials would attend the gathering. The US boycott has dominated discussions — more so than the summit's agenda, which includes climate resilience, debt sustainability for poor nations and growing inequality.

EU and South Africa sign minerals deal ahead of G20
The European Union and South Africa said Thursday they have agreed to boost exploration, extraction and refining of minerals and metals in the resource-rich African nation to secure supplies for the green transition.

A deal laying the foundation for future cooperation was signed in Johannesburg as EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa met ahead of a G20 summit.

Brussels has been scrambling to secure critical minerals and rare earth elements, which are essential for electronic goods such as batteries, and needed for the bloc's green transition.

"We need these inputs to power the clean energy transition, both here and in Europe," von der Leyen told a press conference.

The agreement comes as Brussels and Pretoria seek to bolster relations, both buffeted by US tariffs.

US President Donald Trump has accused South Africa of persecuting white farmers, a narrative denied by Pretoria.

US denies ending South Africa G20 boycott
President Donald Trump's administration on Thursday vehemently denied South Africa's announcement that the United States was ending a boycott of this weekend's G20 summit in Johannesburg, saying no US official would take part in talks.

President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier Thursday described an 11th-hour about-turn by the Trump administration, which had relentlessly attacked South Africa over treatment of white minority farmers by the post-apartheid government.

The White House said the US ambassador would attend but only for a handover ceremony as the United States will next year host the summit of the club of global economic powers, at a golf club owned by Trump in Florida.

"The United States is not participating in official talks at the G20 in South Africa," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters.

"I saw the South African president running his mouth a little bit against the United States and the president of the United States earlier today, and that language is not appreciated by the president or his team," she said.
PM Modi South Africa Visit Live: Secretary (ER) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Sudhakar Dalela, said the South African G20 Summit reflects priorities championed during India’s G20 Presidency. Addressing a Special MEA Briefing on the Prime Minister’s visit to South Africa, he noted that food security and disaster risk management are central to this year’s agenda.

“The Johannesburg G20 Summit marks the culmination of the first cycle of 20 G20 presidencies. The priorities identified by South Africa are aligned with those of India and Brazil, ensuring continuity on issues that matter to the Global South,” Dalela said.

He stressed that the focus on Global South concerns has continued seamlessly across the presidencies of countries from the region. India, he recalled, had established a Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group, underscoring the importance it attaches to the subject. “The South African presidency has carried forward work on disaster risk reduction and resilience as key priorities. Similarly, through the task force on food security, the dialogue on this critical challenge has been advanced,” he added.

Dalela said several priorities from the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration — including digital public infrastructure, women-led development, and the action plan to accelerate SDG progress — were also taken forward in Johannesburg.

“The New Delhi Declaration provided a strong basis for many G20 outcome documents this year. India’s flagship priorities — from digital public infrastructure to women’s empowerment, as well as outcomes from India-initiated working groups — have found strong resonance in the South African presidency,” he said.

He further noted that the Deccan High-Level Principles on Food Security and Nutrition were reinforced in this year’s discussions. “Commitments to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency are among other key outcomes strengthened under the South African presidency,” he said.

Dalela added that the Johannesburg Summit will also see the conclusion of four emerging-economy tracks.
