SRINAGAR: Seven leaders of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference and Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Forum were detained by police here on Friday for staging a demonstration against Supreme Court verdict upholding the death sentence of Jaish-e-Mohammad militant Mohammad Afzal.
Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik also led a sit-in in Sopore, the hometown of Afzal, while lawyers boycotted courts as a mark of protest against the verdict, official sources said.

Mir accompanied by several other leaders of the moderate faction took to streets at regal chowk in the heart of the city this afternoon, shouting slogans against the death sentence to Afzal.
However, police swung into action and took Mir and seven other separatist leaders, including spokesman of Hurriyat and senior leader of Awami Action Committee Shahid-ul-Islam and head of Rrepublican Party Abdul Manan Bukhari into preventive custody, the sources said.
They said JKLF chairman and his supporters reached Sopore this morning and staged a dharna in protest against the court verdict.
Shopkeepers pulled down their shutters and joined Malik in the sit-in demanding revoking of the court order.
Meanwhile, work in the High Court and its subordinate courts was paralysed today as the lawyers went on one-day token strike to register their protest against the capital punishment to Afzal.
