BIHARSHARIF (BIHAR): A Dalit woman was allegedly held captive for nearly two months by the owner of a private nursing home near the Girls's High School here for not paying the bills for a caesarean operation. Sonwa Devi (23) was admitted to the nursing home on November 19. She was released only on Tuesday, after her mother filed a complaint with Nalanda DM Anand Kishore, alleging that the nursing home owner had illegally confined Sonwa for non-payment of dues. Nursing home owner Pankaj Kumar said Sonwa, wife of Vinod Ravidas of Hasani village in Nalanda district, was brought to his nursing home in a critical condition.
"Against expenses of around Rs 20,000, her family paid Rs 5,500 to the nursing home," he said. But Sonwa said her family had paid Rs 6,000.
"When nursing home authorities demanded that the remaining bill be cleared, Sonwa's mother, Kaushalya, filed a complaint with the DM, alleging that the nursing home authorities had illegally confined the patient," Kumar said. The DM said Kaushalya met him at janata darbar on Tuesday and alleged that her daughter had been confined by the nursing home management. The DM deputed sub-divisional officer Shekhar Chandra Verma and executive magistrate B K Sao to probe the incident. When they visited the nursing home, they found her lying in a room. She was sent back to her village. They recorded her statement on Thursday and will submit a report in this regard to the DM within seven days, sources said.
