Freed by mistake, man returns to jail

In a major lapse, Bikaner Central Jail officials on Wednesday erroneously released an NDPS Act undertrial after processing a bail order in a separate Arms Act case wherein he had been convicted. It was later discovered that the prisoner Madanlal Khinchar, a history sheeter with 16 criminal cases, should have remained in judicial custody for the narcotics case.

On learning of the lapse on Thursday, the jail administration alerted Bikaner police, who launched a search operation to trace Khinchar. The accused, however, surrendered before a court on Friday afternoon, following which he was taken into custody and sent back to the same jail. Jail superintendent Suman Maliwal said an investigation has been ordered.

On August 2, 2007, Khinchar and his accomplices were accused of killing a man over a land dispute. While the trial in this case was underway, Khinchar was released on bail but later arrested for possessing 15g MD on June 13, 2024.
