Congress has decided to form a committee of lawyers in the four states hit by farmers’ protests to help the farmers and journalists facing legal troubles. At a meeting of the AICC legal department chaired by its chairman and Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha, Congress decided to form a panel of lawyers within 48 hours in Punjab, Haryana, UP and Delhi. The banned CPI (Maoist) has issued multiple official statements appearing to confirm law enforcement agencies’ suspicion of “Maoist infiltration” into the ongoing farm agitation. Likening the new farm laws to the infamous British-era Rowlatt Act, the outfit has directed its frontal organisations to continue fighting alongside the farmer fraternity.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Tuesday met Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait and extended “full support” of his party and the Maharashtra government to the farmers’ protest against the contentious farm laws. The Rajya Sabha MP said he reached Ghazipur on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border along with other Shiv Sena MPs on instructions of Maharashtra chief minister and party supremo Uddhav Thackeray, even as the protest site virtually remained a heavily secured fortress for the second day.

Junior home minister G Kishan Reddy on Tuesday told the Lok Sabha that the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) does not maintain any specific data on arrest/detention of ‘civil rights activists’ or journalists. Asked if cases of detention/ arrest of civil rights activities for peaceful dissent were on the rise, he said in the absence of NCRB data, “making any inference regarding trend of arrest and/or detention in this regard is not possible”.

Continued internet suspension in areas on Delhi's outskirts, barricading and installation of barbed wires around protest sites by the Centre will not create a conducive atmosphere for talks over contentious new laws, a farmer leader said here Tuesday.
