MUMBAI: A Sessions court on Friday rejected the plea of model-turned-actress Preeti Jain urging for cancellation of anticipatory bail granted to film maker Madhur Bhandarkar, charged with allegedly raping her. Jain's plea was rejected by judge U D Malvankar, who heard the arguments of both the sides. Jain had pleaded cancellation of Bhandarkar's bail alleging that she had received a threatening SMS from him.
She also alleged that the film maker had gone to Dubai without informing police and that there was a copyright case pending against him. On these grounds, his bail should be cancelled, the actress pleaded.
Bhandarkar's counsel Shrikant Shivade had said the film maker had never sent any threatening SMS to Jain and this was established in police investigations. He said there was a case of copyright against Bhandarkar but it was dismissed in favour of the film maker and he had gone to Dubai after informing the police. Earlier, a similar application of Jain was dismissed by the Bombay High Court after which she moved the lower court.
Bhandarkar had secured bail in the case of alleged rape filed by Jain against him. Jain had alleged in the police complaint that she was raped by Bhandarkar 17 times in the past. She also alleged that Bhandarkar had sought sexual favours from her on the pretext of giving her a role in his film but had not kept his promise. She also produced records of SMS messages sent by the film maker to her in this regard.
