88,710 Covid-19 cases Mumbai in March, 475% rise as compared to Feb (PTI)
Mumbai city reported 88,710 coronavirus cases in March this year, nearly 475 per cent more than the previous month's infection count, the BMC data has revealed. The city had reported 18,359 Covid-19 cases in February and 16,328 in January this year. It means that there were 70,351 more cases in Mumbai in March as compared to the previous month and 72,382 more cases as compared to the tally in January.

India's active Covid-19 caseload crosses 5.8 lakh, 61 per cent in Maharashtra alone

With 39, 544 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, Maharashtra on Thursday continued to report the highest number of daily cases in the country. Maharashtra is followed by Chhattisgarh with 4,563 cases while Karnataka reported 4,225 new cases in the last 24 hours, as per the union health ministry. On Thursday, India's total active caseload reached 5,84,055. It now comprises 4.78 per cent of the country's total positive cases. A net incline of 31,489 cases has been recorded from the total active caseload in the last 24 hours.

Covid vaccination throughout April, including gazetted holidays, at all public, pvt sector centres

Seeking to exponentially expand the countrywide anti-coronavirus inoculation drive, the Centre has decided to keep all public and private sector Covid-19 Vaccination Centres (CVCs) operational throughout April, including on gazetted holidays. The Centre wrote to all states and union territories on Thursday and asked them to make necessary arrangements for this, the Union health ministry said.

In a week, all hospitals must have 10% beds for Covid patients: BBMP
In the next one week, all hospitals must have 10% of beds for Covid patients. As the situation demands, the percentage of beds will be increased,” said a BBMP officer. At Trauma and Emergency Care Centre on Victoria Hospital campus attached to Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, 150 of the 162 Covid beds are occupied, said Dr Smitha Segu, nodal officer. The medical college is working on setting up a 130-bed Covid facility at ‘C’ block of Victoria Hospital.

At a recent meeting with prominent hospitals and medical colleges, the Karnataka health and family welfare department asked hospitals to reserve 10% of their total beds for Covid cases. Currently, government hospitals are largely used for severe Covid patients. Unlike last year, private hospital beds for Covid will be used in a staggered manner.

Covid wards in major hospitals in Bengaluru are nearly full, despite 80% of the cases in the second wave are asymptomatic and require only home isolation. In a 1,000-bed hospital, 10% of the beds are for intensive care. In Covid care for severe patients, at least 40-50% beds should be in ICUs, doctors said.

With Covid-19 cases steadily increasing in Bengaluru, a majority of the hospitals treating the infections said most of their beds are occupied and doctors fear demand for ICU beds could throw up infrastructure and human resources challenges in the coming days.
