London stocks subdued as Brexit fears offset first vaccine approval

London-listed shares were muted on Wednesday as fears about a no-deal Brexit overshadowed news that the UK had become the world's first country to approve the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine. The blue-chip FTSE 100 was flat and the mid-cap FTSE 250 down 0.4% even as the government said the vaccine would be rolled out from early next week.

UK vaccine approval 'historic moment' in Covid-19 battle: Pfizer CEO

Britain's approval of BioNTech-Pfizer's vaccine against Covid-19 marks a "historic moment" in the battle against the pandemic, the US pharma group's chief executive said Wednesday, after his company won the first such authorisation in the West.

Pfizer said it would immediately begin shipping limited supplies to the UK -- and has been gearing up for even wider distribution if given a similar nod by the US Food and Drug Administration, a decision expected as early as next week.

India's daily coronavirus cases continued to stay below the 50,000 mark for the 25th straight day, with 36,604 new infections reported, data from the health ministry showed on Wednesday. The country now has 9.5 million total infections, but cases have been dipping since a peak in September, in spite of a busy festival season last month.
