Coronavirus live updates: Maharashtra reports 31,855 new Covid cases in highest single-day spike

Total number of cases now at 339076 including 336206 recoveries and 898 recoveries. Death toll stands at 1919.

At least seven hawkers from a vegetable market in Dadar area of Mumbai have tested positive for coronavirus during random testing carried out by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), an official said on Tuesday.

Despite a steady inflow of tourists into Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Union Territory did not report any new Covid-19 case in the last 24 hours, a health department official said on Tuesday. The coronavirus tally in the archipelago remained at 5,039, he said.

The pandemic is fast spreading in rural Punjab, with nine districts whose populations mostly live in rural areas accounting for over 47% of deaths and 39% of the caseload in the past one week in the state. The trend has left the authorities worried, as the health infrastructure in villages is much weaker.

The overall number of global Covid-19 cases has surpassed 123.6 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.72 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University. In its latest update on Tuesday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 123,627,191 and 2,722,203, respectively.

Tamil Nadu Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan on Monday inspected fever camps, visited a bus station and urged people to observe Covid-19 appropriate behaviour in Chennai. He also warned that strict action will be taken against violators flouting Covid-19 rules at election rallies. The Health and Family Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu organised a Covid Awareness camp and random RTPCR tests.
