Coronavirus live updates: Maharashtra reports 31,855 new Covid cases in highest single-day spike

India reported 275 new Covid-19 deaths on Wednesday, the most this year, as a second surge in cases fills up hospital beds in states such as Maharashtra. Infections rose by 47,262 in the past 24 hours, the highest since early November, to a total of 11.7 million. Stay here for all live updates

The pandemic is fast spreading in rural Punjab, with nine districts whose populations mostly live in rural areas accounting for over 47% of deaths and 39% of the caseload in the past one week in the state. The trend has left the authorities worried, as the health infrastructure in villages is much weaker.

Global Covid-19 caseload tops 123.6 million
The overall number of global Covid-19 cases has surpassed 123.6 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.72 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University. In its latest update on Tuesday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 123,627,191 and 2,722,203, respectively.
