BP has removed its chairman following what it described as serious concerns tied to governance standards, oversight, and conduct. The decision was unexpected and came just a year after Albert Manifold was appointed to the role.
According to the board, the action was taken after issues emerged that were considered unacceptable, prompting immediate leadership changes. Senior independent director Amanda Blanc said Manifold had contributed positively to BP’s transformation but that the board acted decisively once the concerns were identified.
BP has appointed Ian Tyler as interim chair with immediate effect and has begun the search for a permanent replacement.
Manifold had taken over the chairmanship in October, succeeding Helge Lund, and previously served as CEO of CRH plc from 2014 to 2024.
