Breaking news live updates, May 17: WHO declares public health emergency over rare Ebola strain

A laboratory has confirmed an Ebola case in the major eastern Democratic Republic of Congo city of Goma, which is under the control of the Rwanda-backed M23 militia, health authorities said on Sunday.

"A positive case in Goma has been confirmed by tests carried out by the laboratory. It involves the wife of a man who died of Ebola in Bunia, who travelled to Goma after her husband's death whilst already infected," Professor Jean-Jacques Muyembe, director of the Congolese National Institute for Biomedical Research (INRB), told AFP.

At least four people, including three near Moscow, died in one of the largest Ukrainian overnight attacks against Russia since the start of the war, Russian local authorities said.

A woman was killed after a drone hit her home in Khimki, a city just northwest of Moscow, and two men died in the village of Pogorelki north of the capital, according to local Governor Andrei Vorobyev.

In Moscow itself, at least 12 people were wounded in the nighttime strike, mostly near the entrance to the city's oil refinery, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported. He said the refinery's technology was not damaged.

One person was also killed in the border region of Belgorod, according to local authorities.

Russian air defences destroyed a total of 556 drones over Russia, the country's defence ministry said. Russian forces shot down 81 drones headed for Moscow overnight, marking the largest attack on the capital in over a year, state agency Tass reported.

Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport said drone debris had fallen on its premises without causing damage.

Police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the protesting advocates during the demolition drive carried out by Municipal Corporation on the chambers outside the Civil Court in Kaiserbagh, in Lucknow.

CNG prices have been raised by Re 1 per kg from today, marking the second hike in two days. In Delhi, CNG will now cost Rs 80.09 per kg, while in Noida and Ghaziabad, the revised price stands at Rs 88.70 per kg. Earlier, on May 15, prices were increased by Rs 2 per kg.

Canadian health officials said a passenger from the cruise ship MV Hondius has tested presumptive positive for Andes hantavirus, a rare strain capable of spreading between humans. The individual and their spouse are in hospital isolation. Authorities stressed the overall risk to the Canadian public remains low despite three global deaths linked to the outbreak.

Canada’s High Commissioner to India, Christopher Cooter, met Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh on Saturday to discuss expanding defence cooperation between the two countries. The talks followed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to India in February 2026, during which he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to India’s Ministry of Defence, both sides reviewed steps to strengthen bilateral defence ties, including maritime security and opportunities for joint naval activities. During Carney’s visit, India and Canada also signed several agreements covering energy, technology, defence and critical minerals.

Bulgaria won the 70th Eurovision Song Contest on Sunday as pop singer Dara triumphed with her energetic dance anthem “Bangaranga”. Venezuela announced on Saturday that it had deported Alex Saab, a close associate of Nicolás Maduro who is facing multiple criminal investigations in the United States. The move marks a dramatic reversal for Saab, who was pardoned by former US President Joe Biden less than three years ago in a prisoner exchange deal. Once fiercely defended by Maduro after his arrest in 2020, Saab may now be called to testify against the former Venezuelan leader, who is awaiting trial in New York on drug-related charges.
