Extensive searches followed in the weeks and months after, with help from state and federal agencies like the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI, but yielded no results until recently. Authorities located Smith alive and well on February 20, 2026, at an undisclosed location in North Carolina after fresh tips led detectives to her. She explained to investigators that she left due to ongoing domestic issues, though no prior reports of such problems existed on file, and there was no sign of foul play. Rockingham County District Attorney Katie Gregg noted there was insufficient evidence for charges like abandonment related to her long absence, according to WFMY News 2 reports.Just days later, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, Smith was arrested in Robeson County, about 175 miles from Rockingham, on an active warrant from 2001.
