Who is Michele Hundley Smith? The mother of three found after going missing for 24 years — why was she arrested?
Imagine vanishing without a trace, leaving behind a family who mourned you for over two decades, only to be found in the same state, alive and leading a hidden existence. This seems like a scene out of a James Bond episode, but it is reality for Michele Hundley Smith, a North Carolina mom who vanished many years ago!

Who is Michele Hundley Smith?

Michele Hundley Smith, who is now 62 and a mother of three, vanished nearly 20 years ago when she was 38 years old while living in Eden, North Carolina, and disappeared on December 9, 2001.According to a USA Today report, she told her family she was heading to Martinsville, Virginia, for Christmas shopping but never returned home, leading her husband to report her missing to the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office. Extensive searches followed in the weeks and months after, with help from state and federal agencies like the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI, but yielded no results until recently.

Authorities located Smith alive and well on February 20, 2026, at an undisclosed location in North Carolina after fresh tips led detectives to her. She explained to investigators that she left due to ongoing domestic issues, though no prior reports of such problems existed on file, and there was no sign of foul play. Rockingham County District Attorney Katie Gregg noted there was insufficient evidence for charges like abandonment related to her long absence, according to WFMY News 2 reports.

She was arrested just days after being found!

Just days later, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, Smith was arrested in Robeson County, about 175 miles from Rockingham, on an active warrant from 2001. The charge stemmed from a DWI citation issued by Eden Police on November 11, 2001. She failed to appear in court on December 27, 2001, leaving the warrant pending all those years. She posted bond the same day and is due in Rockingham County District Court on March 26, 2026.

Her daughter posted an emotional video supporting her mother

Her daughter Amanda, now in her late 30s, shared her whirlwind emotions on Facebook last week. "I am ecstatic, I am p*****d, I am heartbroken, I am all over the map!" she wrote, per local media. Amanda added, "Will I have a relationship once more with my mom? Honestly, I can’t answer that because I don’t even know... My initial reaction would be yes, absolutely, but then I think of all the hurt... But even then... My mom is only human, just as we all are.Everything I have been through in life, I can absolutely understand taking off and leaving... I am not saying that she gets off scot-free without accountability or responsibility because she absolutely needs to do that... What I am saying is that I am a runner as well, and while this isn’t something to be proud of at all, it’s a part of being human."Smith has requested privacy regarding her whereabouts, telling authorities she doesn't want anyone, including family, to know exactly where she is, as reported by WFMY News 2.
