Who is Gitanjali J Angmo? Sonam Wangchuk's wife, social activist and educator who firmly stood by him during his time in jail
Ladakh climate activist Sonam Wangchuk is back in the spotlight following his release from the Jodhpur Central Jail after six months. For context, Wangchuk was detained under the NSA (National Security Act) amid Ladakh protests demanding stronger constitutional safeguards, where he led climate-focused demonstrations that drew political scrutiny, as authorities accused Wangchuk of inciting a mob, with the Union Home Ministry alleging his speeches led to voilent clashes that resulted in casualties in Leh on September 24, 2025.
Released on Saturday after months inside, he reunited with partner Gitanjali, who had visited him in jail earlier, making it their first proper catch-up since his arrest.
Born in Balasore, Odisha, to a Punjabi -Jain family, Gitanjali's early life fostered a keen interest in social development. She earned a Physics degree from Fakir Mohan University before pursuing an MBA in Marketing and Finance from the Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar.
Her career as a social entrepreneur and educator aligns with Sonam's mission-driven life, both are passionate about causes bigger than themselves.
Gitanjali showed unwavering support during Sonam's detention. She traveled to Jodhpur Central Jail with advocate Ritam Khare for a meeting on October 7, 2025, later posting on X about his state.
