‘Trying to take advantage of me…’ German tourist’s viral Old Delhi story sparks huge debate online
A short travel story reportedly from Delhi has suddenly taken over social media feeds and turned into a much larger online discussion. What started as a simple post about a tourist exploring the city has now become a talking point about local rides, market tours, and how pricing experiences in busy areas can shape a visitor’s impression. The post continues to be widely shared, with strong reactions pouring in from users online.
A post shared on X by user Ramanand has brought attention to the experience of a German tourist who recently visited Delhi. According to the post, the tourist wanted to explore the city more locally and see everyday life in Old Delhi instead of only visiting common tourist spots.
The tourist was reportedly near the Jama Masjid area when an e-rickshaw driver approached him and offered a short ride through nearby market lanes. The tourist agreed and started a local tour through the busy streets of Old Delhi.
As per the viral post, the ride lasted around 30 minutes. During this time, the tourist was taken through crowded lanes, market areas, and popular food spots in Old Delhi.
The post claims that after the ride ended, the driver asked for Rs 4,500 and described it as a “special foreigner tour.” This reportedly surprised the tourist.
The post further mentions that an elderly tea seller nearby noticed the situation. As per the claim, he stepped in to explain the usual fare to the tourist and also questioned the amount being asked by the driver.
The tea seller is quoted as saying, “Visitors come here to collect memories, not bad experiences.”
After this interaction, the tourist reportedly said, “Today I saw two sides of India… one trying to take advantage of me and another trying to protect me.”
The post quickly spread online and triggered many reactions from users. People shared mixed opinions about tourist experiences and behaviour in busy travel locations.
One user wrote, “That is absolutely right. Some people just try to rob tourists in the pursuit of earning money, as if there is no attachment to the country. But it is heartening to see those who truly love their country, who come forward and help without any selfishness. The real India resides in these good people.”
Another comment said, “Tourists rarely remember exact prices years later – but they always remember whether a place made them feel welcomed or exploited.”
A third reaction stated, “That moment must have been disappointing for him. When visitors come to experience the real beauty of a place, honesty matters more than anything. One unfair moment can change someone’s entire impression.”
Another user wrote, “Not every local becomes family… but the ones who protect strangers represent the real spirit of India ❤️”
One more comment read, “Really a heart touching story ❤️ The real identity of India is our honesty and hospitality, not cheating anyone. A wrong person spoils the image of the entire country, but a good person can recreate the same image. People like such tea vendors are the real example of “Atithi Devo Bhava” ”
Another user added, “The main risk with India – they never disclose price upfront before the service.”
However, as the post continued to circulate online, some users in the comment section also questioned the claims being made. A few users alleged that the incident did not actually happen in Delhi and was instead linked to Kolkata. Others claimed that the reported Rs 4,500 fare was inaccurate and that the viral post may have exaggerated or misrepresented parts of the story. The claims shared in the viral post have not been independently verified.
The incident continues to circulate online, adding to ongoing conversations about how small travel interactions can influence a visitor’s overall impression of a destination.
