Internet reacts to HBO's Harry Potter series casting Ghanaian actor Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape
The first teaser for HBO’s new Harry Potter series has sparked a storm online, with fans reacting to a bold casting choice: Paapa Essiedu, a British actor of Ghanaian heritage, will play Severus Snape. The trailer gave viewers a vivid look at Hogwarts, its characters, and a fresh take on JK Rowling’s world.
Some fans praised the reimagining, saying it brings new energy to a well-loved character. Others criticised the choice, arguing it strays from the books’ description of Snape as pale and sallow and “changes the story.” Social media filled with debates, memes, and jokes about the casting, showing the internet’s typical mix of excitement and controversy.
The casting of a Black Snape is not new to criticism. Since Essiedu’s casting was announced in April 2025, he has faced racist abuse, including messages threatening his life. Essiedu told media, “Quit or I’ll murder you” and “I’m going to come to your house and kill you.”
He added, “nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job” and admitted, “I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t affect me emotionally.” Despite the threats, he said the backlash strengthens his resolve to bring visibility to the role and make it his own.
Supporters note that Snape’s character is defined by his inner conflict, isolation, and redemption. Essiedu has a track record for portraying complex roles, from “I May Destroy You” to the stage production “Death of England,” showing he can handle Snape’s psychological depth. Casting him does not alter Snape’s story but can add layers of marginalisation, resilience, and moral ambiguity.
Even JK Rowling has not opposed Essiedu’s casting, allowing the production team creative freedom. Fans now await the series, where the success of a Black Snape will depend on writing, direction, and Essiedu’s performance, while the internet continues to share memes and debate the bold choice.
