How will the world end? 5 theories that are widely acknowledged
The world's end has raised conjectures and terrified human minds for centuries. The exact way how the final chapter of Earth will present itself is still unknown, but various theories have emerged, and each has a different vision regarding how it will all come to an end. These theories vary from cosmic events to man made reasons for catastrophes. There are mainly five theories widely known to answer the old question of how the world will end.
One of the most popular theories about the end of the world is through a catastrophic asteroid impact. History is a proof, as it is largely believed that the dinosaurs went extinct around 65 million years ago due to a massive asteroid collision. If such an event would happen today, it would be disastrous. The collision would release an enormous amount of energy, causing global destruction, fires, and tsunamis. Dust and debris released into space may even block sunlight, possibly leading to a "nuclear winter" effect, resulting in changing the climate and potentially devastating much of life on Earth. NASA and other space agencies are currently tracking near-Earth objects to prevent such a disaster. The asteroid impact theory is supported by many astronomers and planetary scientists. It gained significant attention from the work of Luis Alvarez and his son Walter Alvarez, who proposed that a massive asteroid impact led to the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Super volcanic eruptions are another type of natural disaster that could be a possible reason for the end of the world . Quite different from the regular volcanic eruptions, super volcanoes release enormous amounts of magma, ash, and gases into the atmosphere. The last known super volcanic eruption occurred around 74,000 years ago at the Toba Caldera in Indonesia, and it is believed to have caused a significant global cooling event. Today, if a supervolcano erupts, it can lead to the same "volcanic winter". Ash would block sunlight and cause temperatures to seep down, which would be severely impact the agriculture and food supply and could also result in mass starvation and societal collapse. The concept of supervolcanic eruptions and their potential global impact is well-documented in the geological and volcanological fields. Researchers like Stephen Self and many others have studied the effects of past super volcanic eruptions, such as the Toba eruption.
Climate change, caused by human activities including burning fossil fuels and deforestation, is the greatest danger to life on Earth. Prominent climate scientists such as James Hansen and Michael E. Mann have significantly contributed to this field. The steady rise in global temperatures is melting ice caps, raising sea levels, and causing increasingly extreme weather events. So if it is not checked, climate change will make parts of the planet uninhabitable by living beings, disrupt habitats, and lead to mass food and water shortages. There is also the future potential for severe climate events, such as hurricanes, droughts, and heatwaves, to become more frequent and intense, which presents a major risk to human civilization.
One of the most fearsome end-of-the-world scenarios is the possibility of a large-scale nuclear war. Not only would detonations from multiple nuclear weapons cause immediate destruction and loss of life but also long-term environmental damage. The concept of "nuclear winter" proposes that smoke and soot from burning cities and forests would block sunlight, thereby lowering global temperatures. This could pave the way for the collapse of agriculture, a huge shortfall in food, and widespread famine. Additionally, health and environmental effects due to radiation from nuclear fallout would be disaster-struck. Carl Sagan and Richard P. Turco notably advanced the theory of nuclear winter, that is the potential aftermath of a large-scale nuclear war. The concept was based on scientific studies in climatic effects due to nuclear explosions.
Modern and quite controversial theory is given in the rise of artificial intelligence about the end of the world. Although it is going to revolutionize lots of the aspects of human life, yet some experts claim the dangers that a super intelligent machine has when created will be above the human intellect and then could give an existential threat if AI went out of its control or developed goals incompatible with the interests of the humans. Several experts have identified threats associated with artificial intelligence. Nick Bostrom outlines the risks in creating a super intelligent form of AI in his work titled "Superintelligence," whereas Elon Musk has also spoken to be cautious. While, the scenarios vary from unintended harm by AI systems to the deliberate erasure of humanity to attain their goal. This theory highlights the need to design AI with proper safety features and ethical rules.
