Google emails teen to ‘graduate’ from parental supervision: Furious mom slams company for 'grooming minors for profit'

This is no made-up story, but a recent incident posted online by a concerned mother.Melissa McKay, president of the Digital Childhood Institute, blasted Google in a LinkedIn post after they emailed her youngest child. The message said he was “almost 13” and eligible to remove parental controls from his account. McKay shared screenshots of the email and Google help pages stating kids over 13 can stop supervision and take “full responsibility.”Google's system notifies children at 13 (or local age limits) they're eligible to end supervision via Family Link, per official support pages. McKay called it predatory writing, “A trillion dollar corporation is directly contacting every child to tell them they are old enough to ‘graduate’ from parental supervision. The email explains how a child can remove those controls themselves, without parental consent or involvement,” she wrote on LinkedIn.She added it “reframes parents as a temporary inconvenience to be outgrown and positions corporate platforms as the default replacement.”See post here McKay fumed, “This is disgusting. And last I checked, my ‘parental’ rules last as long as my child is in my care. For most, that’s 18, when they’re still a minor,” as quoted in comments on her post. One parent shared that Apple did the same to their daughter at 13, who then argued, “Why don’t you trust me when Apple clearly agrees it’s okay,” causing home friction. Users slammed the logic on social media, “I am also really struck and alarmed by the statement ‘children decide when to stop supervision’. Seriously?? If the child decides when to override the parenteral-based controls, then what’s the point of such controls?”. Another called it “grooming minors for profit”.
