Czech Republic treasure find: Gold worth crores sparks mystery

Two hikers in the northeastern part of the Czech Republic made a surprising discovery while walking through the woods. While following a mountain trail, they spotted a hidden box tucked into a rocky wall. What was inside has now caught the attention of archaeologists and historians, prompting a full-fledged investigation.

An unplanned shortcut leads to a historical puzzle

While walking through the forested Krkonoše Mountains, the hikers noticed a piece of an old metal box sticking out from the ground. Curious, they decided to open it– and were stunned to find a hidden collection of gold and antique items, including nearly 600 coins, pieces of jewellery, and vintage accessories.

They immediately reported their find to the Museum of Eastern Bohemia in Hradec Králové. Miroslav Novak, who heads the archaeology department at the museum, confirmed the timeline of events. “The finders came to our museum’s numismatist (coin expert) without a prior appointment. Only after that did archaeologists begin to deal with the find and set out to explore the site,” he shared in an email to CNN.

Coins, gold, and unanswered questions

According to the report, inside the box were 598 gold coins, 10 bracelets, 17 cigar cases, a compact mirror, and a comb. While experts are still looking into the history behind these items, the gold coins alone weigh around 3.7 kilograms, giving them a metal value of about $360,000. Interestingly, two of the cigar cases are still sealed shut, and further examination is needed to find out what's inside.

Vojtěch Brádle, the museum’s coin specialist, noted that the mix of items found in the box is unusual for the region. “Usually, Czech finds from the 20th century mainly contain German and Czechoslovak coins. There is not a single one here,” he explained, as quoted by CNN.

Clues hidden in the currency

The origin of the coins is also quite unusual. Most of them come from the Balkans or France, with not a single German or Czech coin– something that's rarely seen in discoveries from this part of Europe.

Brádle added, “Most of the pieces from this treasure did not travel directly to Bohemia. They must have been somewhere in the Balkan Peninsula after the First World War. Some of the coins have countermarks from the former Yugoslavia. These were only minted on coins sometime in the 1920s or 1930s. At the moment, I do not know of any other Czech find that would contain coins with these countermarks.”

When and why was it hidden?

One of the coins is dated 1921, which helps experts estimate the possible time when the treasure might have been buried. However, who hid it and why still remains a mystery. “It is most likely related to the turbulent period before the start of World War II, when the Czech and Jewish population was leaving the border area, or to 1945, when the Germans were leaving,” said Novak, as quoted by CNN. Interestingly, the spot where the box was found used to lie along a historical ethnic border, adding yet another layer to the mystery.

Public speculation and ongoing analysis

As news of the discovery spread, the museum started getting calls and messages from locals, sharing their own theories and stories. Some believe the treasure might have once belonged to prominent families like the Swéerts-Špork, who were well-known landowners in the area. Others think it could be connected to military movements or wartime activity.

Mary Heimann, a professor of modern history at Cardiff University, pointed to the significance of the 1921 coin. “It was an unstable period, there was a downturn in the economy and widespread unemployment. For that reason, it’s not that surprising somebody would think of burying a stash of gold at that time,” she said, as quoted by CNN.

She added, “(The person who hid the coins) could have been a collector, or someone who worked in museums. Or someone who stole a collection from somewhere. This is borderland territory, it separates what’s today the Czech Republic– what was in the past Czechoslovakia– from Poland.”

Next Steps: From discovery to display

All the items found are currently being examined by experts to better understand their origins and historical significance. Once the analysis is complete, the items will be preserved and added to the museum’s coin collection. A short public exhibition is also in the works for the coming months.

According to Czech law, any archaeological discovery belongs to the local regional authority from the moment it’s found. Novak confirmed that everything has been done by the book. “In this case, the treasure was correctly handed over to the museum,” he said, as quoted by CNN. “The finder is entitled to a financial reward, which depends on the value of the metal or historical appraisal.”

What started as a simple hike has now turned into a major historical case– one that could soon uncover answers hidden for nearly a hundred years.

I’m pretty sure it was me who left them there. I was doing some astral projection in that area at that time. I always wondered what happened to them. You can return them to me now.
