From Chimpanzees to Rats: 5 animals who are smarter than you think!

Animals are way smarter than we might actually imagine, be it chimpanzees making tools like mini engineers, parrots talking like pros, or crows filling up pots with stones to drink water. Intelligence can be measured on the basis of brainpower, problem-solving, social smarts, and self-awareness, not just human tricks. These five criteria prove that nature is packed with brainy wonders, whether it be animals living in jungles or oceans. Here are five smart animals found in the wild, according to Discovery Wildlife:

2/6

Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees, our closest relatives, make tools like sticks for insects, leaves for wiping, and rocks for cracking nuts. They communicate using calls, gestures, and facial expressions, passing skills generationally. Some learn sign language in captivity and recognise themselves in mirrors, showing self-awareness beyond that of young children.
3/6

Komodo Dragons

The world's largest and smartest lizards, Komodo dragons ambush prey like deer after hours of camouflaged waiting. They devour anything, using venomous teeth. In captivity, they recognise names and keepers, using brute force with cunning strategy in Indonesia's wilds.
4/6

African Grey Parrots

Popularly called the smartest birds, African grey parrots mimic words with understanding. Alex, a famous parrot studied by animal psychologist Dr. Irene Pepperberg over 30 years, identified 50 objects, seven colours, five shapes, counted to six, and reasoned like a five-year-old. Endangered by the pet trade and habitat loss, their cognition surprises everyone.
5/6

Dolphins

Dolphins have the second-highest brain-to-body ratio after humans. Australian bottlenose dolphins use sponges to flush out fish; others trap prey in mud rings or team with Brazilian fishers to catch fish with nets. These collaborative hunters show tool use and social intelligence across oceans.
6/6

Rats

Rats excel in mazes with spatial memory, can distinguish numbers, identify humans, and sense via ultrasensitive whiskers. They hear beyond the human range and move their eyes independently. Adaptable survivors, they can be found globally and are even trained for landmine detection, thanks to their smarts and quick breeding.
