6 lizards with strange skills and even stranger looks

6 extraordinary lizards that look like they belong in a sci-fi movie

When we think of lizards, most of us picture the tiny ones clinging to walls or disappearing behind furniture. They’re part of everyday life in India– but beyond those familiar house geckos, there’s a whole world of lizards that are anything but ordinary.

From rainforests to rocky deserts and remote islands, some lizards have evolved in ways that are genuinely surprising. Some can glide between trees, others are so well-camouflaged they’re almost impossible to spot, and one even swims into the ocean to find its food.

In a time when so much wildlife is under threat, these lesser-known reptiles remind us just how diverse– and strange– nature can be. Here’s a look at six lizards from around the world that are truly unlike the rest.

2/7

Marine Iguana

This lizard doesn’t stay on land like most others. The marine iguana, found only in the Galápagos, actually dives into the ocean to feed. It eats algae off underwater rocks, using its strong claws to grip the surface as waves crash around it. Its rough, salt-covered body might look a little intimidating, but it’s surprisingly calm and spends most of its time just basking in the sun.

3/7

Frilled Lizard

You’ve probably seen a picture of this one with its frill spread wide. The frilled lizard, mostly found in northern Australia, has a dramatic way of scaring off predators: it suddenly opens the large, fan-like skin around its neck, stands up on its hind legs, and hisses loudly. It looks wild, but it’s all show.

4/7

Armadillo Girdled Lizard

This small, spiny lizard has a clever way of defending itself. When it feels threatened, it curls into a ball, biting its own tail. This posture protects its soft belly and turns it into a spiky, armoured ring that’s hard for predators to mess with. It used to be popular in the exotic pet trade, but that’s slowed down now due to conservation efforts and habitat concerns.

5/7

Parson’s Chameleon

Big, slow, and oddly graceful, the Parson’s chameleon is one of the largest chameleon species in the world. It’s native to Madagascar’s forests, where it moves carefully through the trees, taking its time with everything it does. Even its eggs take a long time to hatch– sometimes over a year. Unlike most lizards that live fast and move fast, this one seems built for patience.

6/7

Flying Gecko

No, it doesn’t exactly fly– but it does glide pretty well. The flying gecko has thin flaps of skin along its body, legs, and tail, which help it glide between trees in the forests of tropical Asia. These skin flaps also help it blend in, looking just like the bark or leaves around it. When a predator gets too close, it simply takes off and disappears into the trees.

7/7

Hidden Dragon

This lizard lives up to its name. Found in the rugged, rocky parts of Australia’s Kimberley region, the hidden dragon is a master of camouflage. It blends in so well with the rocks and dry landscape that researchers often have a hard time spotting it. Its secretive nature helps it avoid predators and stay out of sight, making it one of the more mysterious reptiles out there.
