Facts about bats that will change how you see them

In recent months, interest in wildlife and the environment has grown rapidly– whether it’s about urban biodiversity or species most of us hardly notice. But while animals like tigers, elephants, and dolphins often grab headlines, others remain misunderstood. Bats are a perfect example.

For years, bats have been linked with fear, superstition, and mystery. But in reality, they quietly do a lot for us and the planet. From pollinating plants and spreading seeds to controlling pests, their role in nature is far more important than most people realise. Yet, myths continue to shape how we see them.

Here are five facts about bats that are often overlooked but worth knowing:

Bats are one of the largest groups of mammals

Bats aren’t rare or minor players in the mammal world. With over a thousand species found worldwide, they make up one of the largest mammal groups. They live in all kinds of places– from forests and mountains to even city corners– and eat a variety of foods like fruits, nectar, insects, and, in a few cases, animal blood.

3/6

They’re the only mammals that can truly fly

What makes bats unique is their ability to fly. Unlike flying squirrels, which only glide, bats can take off, stay in the air, and steer with ease. Their wings are actually stretched-out fingers covered by thin skin, which makes them incredibly agile in flight.

Bat droppings make great fertiliser

It might sound unusual, but bat droppings– called guano– are packed with nutrients like nitrogen and potassium. For centuries, farmers have used it as a natural fertiliser to enrich the soil. Even today, it’s valued in organic farming as a chemical-free option.

5/6

Not all bats hang upside down

The image of bats hanging upside down is common, but not always true. While most species roost this way because of their special leg structure, some have adapted differently. Certain species can rest on flat surfaces or even cling to leaves and branches.

Bats aren’t blind– they can see quite well

The saying “as blind as a bat” is misleading. Most bats can see, and many even have good night vision. Smaller bats often rely on echolocation to find food in the dark, while larger fruit bats mostly depend on their eyesight. In many cases, they use both senses together to survive.
