The majesty of Jupiter

Jupiter is the largest and most majestic planet in our solar system. It has a thick atmosphere of hydrogen and helium, swirling with storms and winds that can reach up to 600 km/h. It also has a powerful magnetic field that produces stunning auroras at its poles. But Jupiter is not alone. It is orbited by at least 95 moons, some of which are among the most fascinating and diverse worlds in the solar system. From volcanic Io to icy Europa, from cratered Callisto to ringed Ganymede, Jupiter’s moons offer a glimpse into the wonders of the cosmos. Here are 10 of the most beautiful pictures of Jupiter and its moons shared by NASA:

Facts about Jupiter

Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, named after the king of the ancient Roman gods. It has a diameter of about 139,822 kilometers (86,881 miles), which is more than 11 times the diameter of Earth. It is primarily composed of hydrogen and helium, similar to the composition of the Sun. It doesn't have a solid surface like Earth; instead, its atmosphere gradually transitions into its dense, liquid metallic hydrogen layer as you move deeper into the planet.

Jupiter’s auroras

This image shows Jupiter’s auroras in ultraviolet wavelengths, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. The auroras are caused by charged particles from the sun and Jupiter’s moons interacting with the planet’s magnetic field. The image also shows Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, a giant storm that has been raging for centuries.

Jupiter’s winds

This image shows Jupiter’s winds, captured by the Juno spacecraft. The winds are so strong that they create patterns and swirls on the planet’s surface, visible in different colors. The image was taken from about 10,200 miles above the cloud tops.

Io

This image shows Io, the most volcanic moon in the solar system, captured by the Juno spacecraft. Io has hundreds of volcanoes that spew lava and sulfur, creating a colorful and dynamic landscape. The image shows Io half illuminated by sunlight and half in shadow.

Europa

This image shows Europa, one of the most intriguing moons in the solar system, captured by the Europa Clipper spacecraft. Europa has a thick ice crust that covers a global ocean of liquid water, which may harbor life. The image shows the cracks and streaks on Europa’s surface, caused by the tidal forces of Jupiter.

Ganymede

This image shows Ganymede, the largest and only moon in the solar system with its own magnetic field, captured by the Juno spacecraft. Ganymede has a thin atmosphere of oxygen and a complex geology of craters, mountains, and valleys. The image shows Ganymede’s dark and light terrain, as well as its thin rings.

Callisto

This image shows Callisto, the most heavily cratered moon in the solar system, captured by the Galileo spacecraft. Callisto has a thick ice crust and a possible subsurface ocean of salty water. The image shows Callisto’s ancient and rugged surface, dotted with impact scars.

Jupiter and Io

This image shows Jupiter and its volcanic moon Io, aligned in a rare conjunction, captured by the New Horizons spacecraft. The image shows the contrast between the gas giant and the rocky moon, as well as the plumes of sulfur dioxide from Io’s volcanoes.

Jupiter’s Great Red Spot

This image shows Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, the largest and most persistent storm in the solar system, captured by the Juno spacecraft. The Great Red Spot is about twice the size of Earth and has been observed since the 17th century. The image shows the details and colors of the storm, as well as the smaller storms around it.

Europa and Jupiter

This image shows Europa and Jupiter, as seen from the New Horizons spacecraft. The image shows the icy moon rising above the gas giant, creating a stunning contrast of size and color. The image also shows the thin line of Europa’s atmosphere and the faint glow of Jupiter’s rings.

Jupiter and Ganymede

This image shows Jupiter and its ringed moon Ganymede, as seen from the Hubble Space Telescope. The image shows the gas giant and its largest moon in natural color, highlighting their different features and hues. The image also shows Ganymede’s transit across Jupiter’s face, creating a small shadow on the planet.
