10 iconic animal coins from around the world (1)

Throughout history, coins have done more than just carry value. They have carried history and told stories in the form of shared symbols of power. One of the most important and attractive, and inclusive aspects of the coin design is that even animals have been included on them to represent the culture of a nation.

There have been multiple coins across the world that have designs of birds and reptiles that are either the national animals of the respective countries or are tied to culture, identity, and even the legendary tales.
Some coins represent the native wildlife as a tribute to biodiversity, while others use animals to connect with a nation's history or mythology. These coins become collectibles not only for their material worth, but also for the rich stories they carry.

Here are 5 coins that have animal designs and tell a unique story.

The Gold Kangaroo

First launched as the Australian Gold Nugget, this coin changed its imagery in 1989 to coin with the imprint of an animal, the kangaroo. As a globally recognized symbol of Australia, the kangaroo added value and national pride to this gold bullion coin. In 2011, the Perth Mint even created a one-ton gold Kangaroo, the largest gold coin ever minted. With annual design changes, collectors worldwide anticipate each year’s unique depiction of the beloved marsupial.

Canada’s Loonie

Introduced in 1987, the Canadian "loonie" replaced the one-dollar bill with a coin featuring the elegant common loon. The coin was designed to gain public attention by bringing to limelight a native bird that was familiar to Canadians. The move worked as two years later, Canada officially retired the paper dollar. Today, the loonie is more than just currency, it’s a proud piece of Canadian identity that is iconic to have inspired the two-dollar “toonie.”

The Mexican Peso

The Mexican peso shows a scene from Aztec legend, that is an eagle devouring a snake on the tops of a cactus. This vision is said to be received by Aztec leaders, leading to the founding of their capital Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City. That image became Mexico’s coat of arms, appearing on both the flag and the peso. It’s a reminder that national identity often finds its roots in mythology, with the golden eagle being symbolic of strength and deep cultural heritage.

5/6

The Buffalo Nickel

The Buffalo nickel was minted between 1913 and 1938. It is one of the most distinctly American coins ever produced. It shows a Native American profile on one side and a mighty bison on the other, representing the spirit of the American West. The bison was modeled after a real animal named Black Diamond. This coin not only carried economic value, but also showed the country’s rugged history and cultural interplay. In 2001, a silver version of the coin was reissued.

France’s Rooster Coin

The French Twenty Franc Rooster coin, issued from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, features the proud Gallic rooster, which is France’s unofficial national bird. The rooster represents vigilance and bravery, the values that are deeply associated with the French spirit. The other side displays the goddess Ceres, symbolizing abundance. Although many of these gold coins were melted down during World War I, surviving pieces are now treasured as they are historically rare and symbolic of classic French artistry.
